14th annual Student Research and Creativity Celebration

The Buffalo State campus will be abuzz with innovation and thought-provoking ideas on Friday, April 27, and Saturday, April 28, during the 14th annual Student Research and Creativity Celebration.

This year’s celebration includes 375 presentations, performances, and art exhibitions that feature the work of more than 500 of Buffalo State’s undergraduate and graduate students. The research is impressive and diverse, representing a wide range of disciplines.

 “Undergraduate research continues to gain momentum on campuses across the country and other colleges and universities model their programs after ours,” said Jill Singer, director of Undergraduate Research Office and professor of earth sciences and science education. “In particular, other institutions are interested in learning more about engaging the entire campus in undergraduate research—not just the ‘sciences,’ something that Buffalo State does very successfully.”

The celebration begins at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 27, with the original one-act play P.S. Somewhere performed in the Flexible Theatre. From 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Buffalo State President Aaron Podolefsky and Provost Dennis Ponton will host an opening reception in the E. H. Butler Library lobby. Afterward, guests can view the fine arts student exhibition in the Czurles-Nelson Gallery, Upton Hall, which will be open until 9:00 p.m.

Research papers and poster sessions will be presented Saturday, April 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the library, and oral presentations, divided by academic groups, will take place throughout the day. Eight hour-long poster sessions, each with a diverse representation of disciplines, will run concurrently with the oral presentations.

“One of the best features of this campuswide event is that it helps our students learn about the value and importance of communicating and sharing new knowledge or exhibiting a new work of art,” Singer said. “Every student presenter has benefited from the commitment of a dedicated mentor (or mentors) who provided the right mix of encouragement, feedback, and guidance throughout each step of the research, scholarly, and creative process.”
