Buffalo State College and the Coalition of Faculty Associations of Western New York (COFAWNY) will present a day-long conference on John Henry Newman’s “The Idea of a University,” on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005 in Butler Library 210 on the campus at 1300 Elmwood Ave.

Mark Chaykin, director of field operations for NYSUT, will give opening remarks, and The Rev. Joel Warden, of the Community of Oratorians, Brooklyn, will give the keynote address, “Personal, Pedagogical and Theological Background to ‘The Idea of a University,’” at 9:30 a.m.

Three discussion groups will follow:

The Effects of “The Idea of a University,” at 10:15 a.m., with Msgr. Patrick Keleher, Newman Center, University at Buffalo; The Rev. James Pribek, Department of English, Canisius College; and Dr. Edward O. Smith, Director of the Monroe Fordham Regional History Center and Buffalo State College Distinguished Service Professor of History and Social Studies Education

Newman’s Ideas and the American University, at 1 p.m., with Professor Emeritus Joan Roberts, English Department, Buffalo State College; Professor Emeritus David Karnath, English Department, Buffalo State College; and Professor Laurence Shine, University College, Buffalo State College; and,

The Future of the Idea of a University, at 3 p.m., with Professor Ellen Banks, Department of Psychology, Daemen College; Professor Emeritus Frank Higman, Mathematics Department, Niagara University, and former president of the New York State AAUP; and Professor John Schedel, Department of Media and Communication, Medaille College.

Advance registration, though not required, is recommended. A $10 fee, waived for students, will cover the cost of a continental breakfast and lunch.
