Alumni Profile: Reunited... and It Feels So Good!

Lifelong friendships are something to cherish. A group of Delta Sigma Upsilon sorority sisters have reunited over the past 23 years at various locations around the country, and their “connection is pure Buffalo State.”

'What’s better than social networking with friends online or catching up through holiday cards every year? A face-to-face reunion, that’s what!

Traversing the country every other year, a group of Buffalo State Delta Sigs(“Green and white—those are our colors”) from the graduating classes of 1967, 1968, and 1969 meet for a week in the summer to celebrate, sing, beach-hop, shop, play, sightsee, and share our lives with our sisters of old. Aging we are, but nonetheless very engaged in the business of living!

Starting with a loosely concocted plan to meet on campus in Buffalo for a 25-year reunion in 1993, we have gradually grown our gatherings into a biennial reunion in different parts of the country, since we live now in cities from “California to the New York Island.”

Sisters hail from Alaska, Washington, California, Michigan, Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Georgia, and Florida—and those states inspire our reunion sites. So far, we have enjoyed the serenity of Yosemite, the beauty of the Northwest and gardens in Vancouver, water sports on a Michigan lake, the beaches of both Cape Cod and the Outer Banks, the magnificent homes of Newport, and the luscious green of the Finger Lakes, where we welcomed another contingent (a few Alpha Sigs joined us for a lively afternoon)! Next we explored the coast of Oregon, and the most recent excursions took us to the pristine shores of Maine and to the west coast for a week in sunny Santa Barbara.

Our connection is pure Buffalo State—the black-and-orange colors, not the sorority greens or reds or browns of our past.

The most challenging part of our mission is to decide what state to visit next and then to find a house that accommodates a group of women who like to cook, eat, and drink. We are now busy compiling a how-to manual for others who would like to plan their own reunions. We have even thought of branching out for a trip to the islands or overseas—once we all retire. Anyone interested? Give us a call!"

Suzanne Paterno Calnon, ’68, and Sharon Feldman, ’68, are members of a group of Delta Sigma Upsilon sorority sisters who have reunited over the past 23 years at locations across the country. The group recently mourned the loss of two sisters—Janet Kornmeyer Springfield, ’68, and Mary Tegeler Kasiewicz, ’67—and reminds all alumni to rejoice in life and friendships.
