MEN’S BASKETBALL (8-3) – Buffalo State Wins York Tournament

Buffalo State earned a berth in the York (PA) College Coaches vs. Cancer Classic with a 78-72 victory over Montclair State on Friday night.

The Bengals led 42-37 at halftime, and held off the Red Hawks in the second half to secure the win. The contest was called with 1:08 remaining after a series of technical fouls and excessive arguing from the Montclair bench and coaching staff.

Josh Becker (Hamburg/Frontier) led the Bengals with 26 points. Perry Davis (Buffalo/Seneca) added 19 points and seven rebounds, and Jeremy Konst (Williamsville/Williamsville East) added 11 points and eight assists.

Buffalo State captured the York (PA) Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, defeating Chowan (NC) in Saturday's title game by a 52-51 margin.

Buffalo State trailed 27-24 at halftime and was down by as many as eight points in the second half before rallying to edge the Braves in the closing minutes. Justin Konst's (Williamsville/Williamsville East) layup with 1:22 remaining proved to be the winning shot as neither team would put more points on the scoreboard. Konst led the Bengals with 12 points. Joshua Becker (Hamburg/Frontier) and Jon Allport-Cohoon (Lockport/Lockport) each tallied 10 points. Perry Davis (Buffalo/Seneca) added eight points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Bengals improved to 8-3 on the season and wrapped up their non-conference schedule with a 6-2 mark. Buffalo State will return to SUNYAC play next Friday when it will host New Paltz in a rematch of last year' SUNYAC Championship game won by the Bengals, 73-40.

MEN’S HOCKEY (3-13) – Bengals Split New England Swing

Buffalo State dropped its first game of the second semester on Friday nightt, falling 4-3 at Plymouth State.

Nick DeMarco (Niagara Falls), Josh Magnuson (Chisago, MN) and Morgan McElman (Bayside, NB) all scored for the Bengals. Goaltender Sean Sheehan (Mt. Laurel, NJ) made 27 saves in his debut with Buffalo State.

Sheehan made 33 saves in his second game as a Bengal to help Buffalo State skate past Framingham 2-1 Saturday night.

Justin Tricoli (Cheektowaga/Erie CC) got the Bengals on the scoreboard first with his first career goal at 16:07 of the second period. Matt Samson (W. Vancouver, BC/Delta Ice Hawks) would add the eventual game-winner early in the final frame. Framingham pulled within a goal with 5:48 remaining, but Sheehan and the Bengals closed the door from there, despite being outshot 34-28 for the game.

Buffalo State improved to 3-12 on the season. The Bengals will return to the road on January 23 and 24 when they will visit Neumann.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (4-6) – Buffalo State Drops Pair at Elizabethtown

Buffalo State fell to host Elizabethtown on Friday, 70-35, in the opening day of the Blue Jay Tournament.

Buffalo State's top scorer was Jacey Brooks (Machias, NY/Franklinville) with nine points, while Amanda Benoit (Deerfield, NY/Whitesboro) came off the bench to lead the Bengals in rebounding with eight rebounds.

Buffalo State faced Messiah (PA) Saturday in the second day of the Elizabethtown (PA) Blue Jay Classic, and the No. 16 team in the nation proved too strong, as the Bengals fell 67-53.

After trailing 36-17 at the intermission, Buffalo State attempted to rally in the final 20 minutes, but could not overcome the deficit.

Darnika Moseley (Liverpool/Liverpool) led the Bengals with her second double-double of the season with a career-high 17 points and 11 rebounds. Jacey Brooks (Machias/Franklinville) added 13 points, and Marcy Dankovich (Celoron/Southwestern) chipped in eight points. Brooks was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Buffalo State fell to 4-6, and will travel to Genevay for a date with William Smith.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY (1-10) – Bengals Fall Twice at Utica

Buffalo State opened up the second semester of play Saturday afternoon at Utica, and dropped a 6-0 decision.

Mary Keddie (Williamsville/Williamsville North) made 71 saves between the pipes for the Bengals.

Buffalo State came up empty against Utica for the second day in a row, falling 11-0 Saturday against the host Pioneers.

The Bengals are now 1-10 overall and are 0-6 in ECAC West play. They will host Neumann this Saturday and Sunday as they will look to snap a nine-game losing streak.
