SOFTBALL – Bengals Post .500 Mark on Ft. Myers Trip

Buffalo State opened its 2004 campaign on Wednesday in Ft. Myers, FL with an 8-3 victory over Lasell (MA), before falling to the 13th-ranked team in Division III Montclair State (NJ), 2-1.

In the opener against Lasell (0-4), Liz Beiter (N. Tonawanda) and Melissa Balsavage (Depew) combined for a two-hitter on the mound, with Beiter earning the victory allowing no runs in four innings. Nadine Sirianni (Niagara Falls) paced the Bengals' offense, going 2-for-3 with a double and a home run and two RBI. Brooke Matheis (Hamburg) was 1-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI.

In the second game, Montclair (5-1) edged the Bengals despite Kristen Scheffold (Lancaster) throwing a complete-game five-hitter with no earned runs. Emily Goldyn (Lancaster) was 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI.



Buffalo State dropped a 5-0 decision to Smith (MA) Thursday morning, before rebounding to upset the No. 9 team in Division III Wheaton (MA), 5-3, in the afternoon in Ft. Myers, FL.

Smith (7-0) shut down the Bengals' bats in today's opener. Freshman Lauren Wright (Westfield) made her debut on the mound for the Bengals, allowing five runs in three innings. Liz Beiter (N. Tonawanda) held the Pioneers off the scoreboard for final four innings as she extended her shutout streak to eight innings to open the season. Alyssa Brosius (N. Tonawanda) was 2-for-2 with a stolen base for the Bengals.

Buffalo State got its offense in gear in today's second game against Wheaton (6-5). Emily Goldyn (Lancaster) was 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI, and Tiffany Ciolek (Salamanca) was 1-for-1 with two RBI. Kristen Scheffold (Lancaster) earned her first win as a Bengal on the mound, allowing six hits and just one earned run.



Buffalo State continued its training trip in Ft. Myers, FL Friday, defeating Wisconsin-Oshkosh 10-3, before falling to Division II St. Michael's (VT) 8-3 in the nightcap.

Buffalo State exploded for 12 hits and 10 runs in the opener. Nadine Sirianni (Niagara Falls) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Lindsey Matheis (Hamburg) was also 2-for-4 with an RBI. Liz Beiter (N. Tonawanda) recorded the win on the mound, scattering eight hits, before Kristen Scheffold (Lancaster) came on in relief for the final two outs.

In the loss to St. Michael's, Nicole Willats (Sweet Home) was 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and two RBI. Melissa Balsavage (Depew) took the loss on the mound, allowing 12 hits.



Buffalo State continued its training trip in Ft. Myers, FL Saturday as it opened the day with a 16-7 victory over New England (NH), but could not earn a sweep for the fourth consecutive day as it fell to Southern Maine, 8-7, in the second game.

The Bengals needed just six innings to dispense with New England in today's opener. Lauren Mruk (Lancaster) was 2-for-4 with a homerun and five RBI to pace Buffalo State's offense. Nadine Sirianni (Niagara Falls) was 3-for-5 with two RBI. Freshman Lauren Wright (Westfield) allowed six runs before being relieved by Liz Beiter (N. Tonawanda) with two outs in the third inning. Beiter earned the victory.

In the loss to Southern Maine, Lindsey Matheis (Hamburg) went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, and Emily Goldyn (Lancaster) was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Kristen Scheffold (Lancaster) took the loss on the mound, allowing 12 hits in six innings.



Buffalo State wrapped up its trip to Ft. Myers, FL Sunday morning, defeating Lawrence (WI), 4-2, before falling to Wisconsin-Whitewater, 6-4.

The Bengals needed eight innings to sneak past Lawrence in the opener. Lauren Mruk (Lancaster) was 2-for-3, including a two-run homerun in the seventh inning to tie the score, and Heidi Rammacher (Lakeshore) drove in the winning run in the eighth. Liz Beiter (N. Tonawanda) went the distance on the mound, registering five strikeouts and allowing just four hits.

Nadine Sirianni (Niagara Falls) went 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Tiffany Ciolek (Salamanca) was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the loss to Whitewater. Kristen Scheffold (Lancaster) started on the mound, allowing four runs in six hits in three innings, before Melissa Balsavage (Depew) allowed two runs on six hits over the final three frames.

Buffalo State is 5-5 and is scheduled to visit Penn State Behrend for a doubleheader on March 30.
