SOFTBALL - Bengals Post 5-1 Mark for Week
Buffalo State followed a familiar pattern on Tuesday at RIT, winning the opener by a 6-2 tally, but dropped the second game, 9-2.
The Bengals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the opener. RIT rallied to close the gap to 3-2 in the fourth inning, but Buffalo State added three more runs in the sixth inning to preserve the victory. Melissa Balsavage (Depew/Depew) earned the win on the mound scattering eight hits over seven innings. Laurie Hutten (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) and Heidi Rammacher (Angola/Lakeshore) were each 2-for-4 at the plate for the Bengals.
In the nightcap, the Bengals struck first to open the game, but RIT's bats came to life pounding 13 hits and producing nine runs. Hutten was 3-for-4 for the Bengals, and Lindsey Matheis (Hamburg/Williamsville South) was 2-for-3 with her first career homerun and a double. Lauren Wright (Westfield/Westfield) took the loss for Buffalo State.
Buffalo State swept a home doubleheader against SUNYAC-rival Oneonta Friday, overcoming a five-run deficit in the first game to win 7-6, and held on to an early lead to claim the late game by a 7-4 margin.
In the opening game, Oneonta jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a Sarah Place (Binghamton/Binghamton) two-run homerun. The Red Dragons opened up a 6-1 lead by the fifth inning, but Buffalo State stormed back with a six-run, seven-hit inning highlighted by a three-run homer by Lindsey Matheis (Hamburg/Williamsville South). The Bengals shut the door in the final two innings and escaped with the 7-6 victory. Liz Beiter (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) earned her seventh win on the mound, despite allowing six runs on 10 hits. Nadine Sirianni (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) and Laurie Hutten (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) were both 2-for-4 for the Bengals. Place finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored, and Michelle Norwich (Mohawk/Mohawk) was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI for Oneonta.

Kristen Scheffold (Lancaster/Lancaster) earned the victory for Buffalo State, as she struck out seven batters in four-and-two-thirds innings of no-hit relief. Willats was 2-for-3 with the two triples and four RBI. Lauren Mruk (Lancaster/Lancaster) was 3-for-3 with four runs, and Sirianni was 2-for-3 for the Bengals. Liz Scimeca (Sayville/Sayville) led the Oneonta offense, going 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
Buffalo State’s offense exploded for 36 runs as the Bengals swept New Paltz in a home doubleheader on Saturday, winning the first game 10-2 and taking the nightcap 26-0.
New Paltz jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the opener, but Buffalo State responded with two in the third, three in the fourth, and five in the fifth to end the game at 10-2. Nadine Sirianni (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) led the Bengals’ bats, going 2-for-3 with a homerun, a double and four RBI. Alyssa Brosius (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) was 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs, and Nicole Willats (Tonawanda/Sweet Home) had a triple at two RBI. Liz Beiter (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) improved to 9-1 on the mound, allowing just five hits and two runs. Colleen Powers (Monsey/Spring Valley) had a double and an RBI to lead the Hawks, and Jessica Schropfer (Glen Oaks/Cardozo) was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
In the second game, Buffalo State tallied 11 runs in the top of the first inning and cruised to the 26-0 victory on 1seven New Paltz errors in just five innings. Brosius led Buffalo State, going 4-for-4 with four RBI. Sirianni was 3-for-5 with five RBI, and Willats was 2-for-4 with a homerun, a double and four RBI. Three Buffalo State pitchers combined for the one-hit shutout with Melissa Balsavage (Depew/Depew) earning the win.
Buffalo State is now 12-8 overall and 6-2 in SUNYAC play. The Bengals will visit Geneseo on Tuesday for another conference doubleheader.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE - BENGALS DOWN FREDONIA AND ALLEGHENY, FALL TO ONEONTA
Buffalo State improved to 4-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the SUNYAC with an 8-4 win over Fredonia on Tuesday at Coyer Field. Fredonia dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the SUNYAC with the loss.
SUNYAC Player of the Week Chelsey Frail (Hilton/East Rochester) led all scorers with six goals, while sophomore Leslie Perrault (Johnson City/Maine Endwell) and freshman Leah Bernal (East Aurora/Iroquois) each added a goal for the Bengals.
Fredonia tallied the first goal of the game at the 10:35 mark on a shot from junior Katelyn Ferry (Lancaster/Lancaster). Four minutes later Frail would tie the game and then score less then a minute later to put the Bengals up 2-1, a lead they would not relinquish. Perrault’s goal made it 3-1 before Frail scored twice more to put Buffalo State up 5-1. Fredonia scored at the end of the first half to cut the lead to 5-2 at the start of the final frame. Bernal’s goal put the Bengals up 6-2 as Buffalo State was able to hold off the Blue Devils attack for the win.
Ferry led the Blue Devils with two goals, Sara Potter (Pittsford/Pittsford Sutherland) and Aimee Baxter (East Rochester/East Rochester) each tallied a goal for the Blue Devils.
Buffalo State goaltender Katie Fels (Williamsville/Williamsville East) improved her record to 4-0 with a nine-save effort in goal. Fredonia’s Sarah Kretz (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) made six saves in the loss. The win marked the first time in the programs history that Buffalo State has gone 4-0 and had a four-game winning streak.
Buffalo State improved its overall record to 5-0 with a 10-4 non-conference win over Allegheny on Thursday at Coyer Field. Sophomore Leslie Perreault (Johnson City/Maine Endwell) led all scorers with a career-best six point effort, coming on four goals and two assists.
The Bengals took a 6-4 lead into halftime, and then came out and shut down the Gator offense in the second half to cruise to a 10-4 victory. Buffalo State freshman goaltender Katie Fels (Williamsville/Williamsville East) stayed perfect on the season with an eight-save performance. Sophomore Chelsey Frail (Hilton/East Rochester) kept her hot streak going scoring three goals in the game. Annie Tallchief (Perrsburg/Lakeshore) added two goals to her career totals and freshman Meagan Powers (Pear River/Pearl River) tallied a goal and six ground balls in the win.
Buffalo State had its five-game win streaked snapped on Saturday as the Bengals were defeated by a score of 16-10 to Oneonta today at Coyer Field. With the loss Buffalo State fell to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the SUNYAC, Oneonta improves to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the SUNYAC.
Buffalo State jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals from juniors Annie Tallchief (Perrsburg/Lakeshore) and Nikole Flannery (Tonawanda/Tonawanda) but the Red Dragons would rally to score five straight goals to gain the lead. Leslie Perreault (Johnson City/Maine Endwell) and Leah Bernal (East Aurora/Iroquois) scored two Buffalo State goals as the two teams traded goals until the score rested at 7-4 with four minutes left in the first half. Perreault put the ball in the back of the net twice more to move the Bengals within one goal at the start of the second half.
The Red Dragons came out of the break and outscored the Bengals 7-2 over the next 20 minutes to seal the victory for Oneonta. Perrault and Bernal each finished with three goals, while sophomore Chon/East Rochester) finished with four points coming on one goal and three assists. Tallchief finished the day with two goals and six groundballs. Megan Powers (Pearl River/Pearl River) and Perrault each tallied an assist in the game.
Buffalo State will be back in action on Tuesday, when they travel to SUNYAC rival Brockport for a 4:00 p.m. game.
