MEN’S SOCCER (3-6-2/2-2) – Bengals Win Twice in Conference

Buffalo State won its first two SUNYAC games of the season, catapulting themselves into the thick of the playoff race.

Buffalo State opened up a 5-0 lead in the first half, and never looked back as it cruised to a 6-0 win on Friday at SUNYIT. Jared Hulshoff (Lockport/Lockport) and Brian Miller (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) each scored twice for the Bengals. Kevin Brenner (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh) and Kevin McKenzie (Springfield/August Martin) added single tallies in the win, while Dave Grant (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) and Shawn McDonell (W. Seneca/W. Seneca East) combined for the shutout between the pipes.

Buffalo State won it second conference game on Saturday, as it defeated New Paltz by a 4-3 margin. Richard Namulala (Kenmore/Kenmore West) scored twice, and Miller and Hulshoff added single tallies for the Bengals. McDonell made six saves for Buffalo State.

Who’s Next?

The Bengals will return to action this weekend when they travel to Plattsburgh and Potsdam this Friday and Saturday.

FOOTBALL (1-4) – Brockport Spoils Bengals Homecoming, 42-14

Brockport’s Bob Darnley went 15-for-20 for 190 yards and two touchdowns as he guided the Golden Eagles to a 42-14 victory today at Buffalo State.

The Golden Eagles found the end zone on each of its first four times they touched the ball as they sprinted to an early 28-0 lead. Adam Jones opened the scoring just 2:15 into the game on a 20-yard pass from Darnley. Matt Boorom reeled in nine-yard pass from Darnley to go up 14-0. Buffalo State appeared to be driving on the ensuing possession, until Steve Fleming intercepted a Mike Mikolaichik (Hilton/Hilton) pass and rumbled 80-yards for a touchdown. Darnley scored on a nine-yard scamper early in the second quarter to extend the lead to 28-0.

Buffalo State got on the scoreboard late in the half when Curtis Hathcock (Buffalo/Bennett) pushed the ball across the goal line on a nine-yard run. Brockport scored once more before the half when Darnley broke a quarterback keeper for 44 yards.

Jon Brown added the Golden Eagles’ final score of the game early second half on a one-yard plunge. Buffalo State found the end zone once more after Nick Columbo (Sanborn/Niagara-Wheatfield) blocked a punt on the Brockport four-yard line, and Hathcock ran it in on the next play for his second score of the day.

Darnley was Brockport’s leading rusher as he carried the ball three times for 69 yards. Matt Boorom led the Golden Eagles’ receiving corps with four catches for 65 yards.

Mikolaichik was 12-for-31 for 148 yards. Hathcock carried the ball 32 times for 92 yards, and Marc Hoppy led the receivers with five catches for 100 yards. Mike Holbok recorded six tackles and two sacks to lead the defense.

Brockport improved to 5-0 on the season, and Buffalo State fell to 1-4.

Buffalo State will travel to Rowan for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff this Saturday.

CROSS COUNTRY – Cross Country Runs Cortland Double Dip Challenge

Buffalo State's men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Geneseo Invitational with the women placing eighth of 18 teams and the men finished 12th of 18.

Aleksandra Halin (Clarence/Clarence) paced the women’s team with a 20th place finish of 173 runners with a time of 24:37. Jenny Vacanti (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) finished 30th in 25:10 and Tiffany Knarr (East Aurora/Iroquois) was 62nd with a time of 25:49.

On the men’s side, AJ Walsh (Hamburg/Frontier) led the Bengals with a 33rd place finish of 208 runners with a time of 27:44. Matt Kubiak (Lakeshore/Frontier) placed 78th with a time of 28:39.

VOLLEYBALL (9-17/0-4) – Bengals Split Non-Conference Week

Buffalo State split a pair of non-conference matches this week.

Buffalo State came up empty on Tuesday at University of Rochester, dropping its sixth consecutive match, losing in straight games, 24-30, 20-30 and 15-30. Krista Wierzbicki (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) paced the Bengals with 28 assists and 14 digs. Vicky Manos (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) recorded 11 kills and nine digs, and Denise Jedynak (Hamburg/Frontier) had 14 digs. Buffalo State snapped a six-match winless streak tonight with a 3-1 victory over St. John Fisher in its home opener, 30-24, 31-29, 21-30 and 30-28.

Wierzbicki led the Bengals with 48 assists and 17 digs. Manos registered 11 kills and 30 digs, and Samantha Damstetter (W. Seneca/W. Seneca East) notched 12 aces, 15 kills and 16 digs. Jedynak tallied 18 digs and moved into sole possession of Buffalo State's career digs record with 1,077.

Buffalo State improved to 9-17 on the season and does not play again until Saturday, October 11 in a tri-match at Medaille.

Buffalo State will finally open its home schedule on Thursday against St. John Fisher.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (5-5-1/2-3) – Bengals Split SUNYAC Twin Bill

Buffalo State split a pair of SUNYAC games this week.

Oneonta used five second-half goals to propel itself past Buffalo State, 6-1, on Friday at Coyer Field. The Bengals hung with the No. 11 ranked team in the nation in the first half. Buffalo State knotted the score at 1-1 when Christina Semertzides (Wappinger Falls/Roy C. Ketchum) found the back of the net on a 35-yard free kick with just three seconds remaining. The Red Dragons proved to be too much in the final stanza, however, as they outshot the Bengals 33-1 for the game and remained unbeaten at 9-0-2 overall and 5-0-1 in SUNYAC play.

Buffalo State improved its overall record to 5-5-1, and 2-3 in the SUNYAC with a 3-1 win over conference opponent New Paltz on Saturday at Towers Field. With the loss the Hawks drop to 1-9-1 overall and 0-6 in the SUNYAC. Freshman Semertzides scored the eventual game winner on a header off a corner kick from senior Amy Drozen (Williamsville/Williamsville East). The Bengals jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute when sophomore Gina Monaco (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) faked out a few Hawk defenders and beat the New Paltz goalie. The Hawks tied the game before Semertzides blasted the game-winner in the 40th minute. Monaco added another goal 15 minutes into the second half to seal the Bengals victory. Jessica Bingerman (Great Valley/Ellicottville) had 11 saves in the win for the Bengals. The Bengals were outshot 18-11 by the Hawks.

Who’s Next?

Buffalo State returns to action on Friday October 10, for a SUNYAC road-game against Plattsburgh at 3:30 p.m. The Bengals will take on conference opponent Potsdam at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 11.
