FOOTBALL (2-8) – Football Shocks Washington & Jefferson, 10-7

Ken Ciolek's (Limestone/Bradford Area) 34-yard field goal with 2:02 to play stunned the No. 17 team in the nation, as visiting Buffalo State upset Washington & Jefferson, 10-7, Saturday in the Bengals' season finale.

Buffalo State got on the scoreboard first when Curtis Hathcock (Buffalo/Bennett) scored on a one-yard run with three minutes remaining in the opening half, capping a 15-play, 63-yard drive. The Presidents answered on the ensuing possession, taking 10 plays to drive 65 yards to the end zone, culminated by a 12-yard pass from Brent Marsteller to Garrett Brain just 21 before intermission.

Each team had four failed possessions to open the second half. Washington & Jefferson attempted to take the lead on a pair of occasions, but had two field goals blocked by the Bengals' Shaun Zelasko (Hamburg/Hamburg). Buffalo State broke the scoreless drought and reclaimed the lead with just 2:02 remaining when Ken Ciolek booted a 34-yard field goal to take a 10-7 advantage.

The Presidents returned the following kickoff to their 41-yard line, but Buffalo State's John Lesure (Rochester/Greece-Athena) intercepted a Marsteller pass just two plays later. Buffalo State held the ball for just 20 seconds, however, and was forced to punt with 1:22 remaining. Washington & Jefferson drove the ball to the Bengals' 35-yard line, but Lesure ended the threat with his second interception in just over a minute with 24 seconds to play.

Hank Pirowski (Lackawanna/Lackawanna) led the Bengals defense with 10 tackles. Michael Holbok (Williamsville/St. Joes) recorded four solo stops, including a sack and three for losses. Offensively, Marc Hoppy (Lancaster/Depew) had 12 catches for 100 yards, breaking the Buffalo State record for catches in a game of 11. Mike Mikolaichik (Hilton/Hilton) was 22-for-30 for 143 yards and tailback Curtis Hathcock carried the ball 34 times for 93 yards.

The Bengals finish the 2003 season with a 2-8 record after their first road victory since 2000. Washington & Jefferson is 8-2 and will have to sit and wait to see if it will earn a bid to the NCAA Playoffs.
