Buffalo State Named 'Best Bang for the Buck College' by 'Washington Monthly'

Washington Monthly magazine has ranked Buffalo State 28th in the “Best Bang for the Buck Colleges in the Northeast” category (out of 402 institutions) in the magazine’s 2015 ratings released Monday.

Buffalo State is the highest ranked four-year college in Western New York on the Best Bang for the Buck College list, which rates colleges that are doing the best job of helping students attain marketable degrees at affordable prices.

In the overall rankings, Buffalo State ranks 95th nationally out of 673 institutions in the master’s universities category. Washington Monthly's overall college rankings rate schools based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and PhDs), and service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).

The designation has been added to the college's growing list of distinctions.

Earlier this year, Buffalo State received the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching’s 2015 Community Engagement Classification. Colleges and universities with an institutional focus on community engagement were invited to apply for this prestigious designation. Buffalo State is also a member of the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, which recognized the college for its more than 500,000 community service hours on the part of students, faculty, and staff during the 2012–2013 academic year.

Later this week, Buffalo State will welcome approximately 2,000 new first-year students to campus (an institutional record). First-year students will move into their residence halls today and participate in orientation Wednesday and Thursday. The college received more than 13,500 applications from prospective freshmen for fall 2015, an eight percent increase from a year ago.

The fall semester begins on Monday, August 31.
