Buffalo State Names Stevens Head Lacrosse Coach
Buffalo State Athletics Director Jerry Boyes announced the hiring of Megan Stevens as Buffalo State's new head women's lacrosse coach effective July 1.
Stevens comes to Buffalo State after spending four seasons as an integral part of Cortland's nationally ranked lacrosse program. She brings a wealth of knowledge to a program that has taken small strides since its inception in 1994. The native of Delmar, NY, becomes the seventh coach in the team's brief history.
As a player at Cortland, she helped the Red Dragons to three-consecutive SUNYAC Championships as well as three-straight trips to the NCAA playoffs. As a senior, she tallied 39 goals and 14 assists in 19 games, including scoring a pair of goals in the team's first-ever victory in the NCAA postseason.
Stevens spent the past year as the head coach of the Bethlehem High School girls' junior varsity lacrosse program, and assisted with the varsity program that advanced to the state semifinals. Her additional coaching experience includes two years at the YMCA in Lake George, as well as nine years volunteering with numerous lacrosse and soccer camps and training sessions.
"Megan has experienced success in several different avenues," said Boyes. "We are confident that she will be able to mentor her athletes to do great things on and off the field."
Stevens formerly interned as a special events coordinator with the Women's Sports Foundation and with the Eastern College Athletic Association. She also served as a chair for the NCAA's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and was a member of the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics, the Cortland Intercollegiate Athletics Board, and the NCAA Division III Task Force, as well as attended the NCAA Leadership Conference.
Stevens completed her bachelor's degree in recreation and leisure management with a minor in sports management this past December. Her other duties at Buffalo State will include heading the athletics department's CHAMPS Lifeskills program, serving as the staff liaison for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, as well as assisting with operation of the school's new fitness center scheduled for completion in September.
