Buffalo State Student Elected President of SUNY Student Assembly
Kaitlyn Beachner, a graduate student in the Student Personnel Administration Department at Buffalo State College, has been elected president of the SUNY Student Assembly.
Student leaders from across the SUNY system convened last month at the SUNY Student Assembly Conference to elect their leadership team for the 2011-12 academic year. Beachner will serve as president of the assembly for a 12-month term starting on June 1, 2011. She will be the first Buffalo State student to hold the position of SUNY Student Assembly President.
“I cannot wait to take office on June 1 and begin representing the more than 467,000 students on our campuses,” said Beachner. “I have always had a passion for student government and standing up for my peers.”
Among her responsibilities are full voting privileges as a student representative with the SUNY Board of Trustees.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Kaitlyn as she takes on the role of Student Assembly President and becomes a voting member of SUNY’s Board of Trustees,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher, who will participate in Beachner’s swearing in ceremony on May 31. “Kaitlyn brings to the table a proven track record of effective representation for her peers, and her prior participation in the strategic planning process means our partnership can hit the ground running on day one of her term. SUNY students should be proud, as we are, of their choice in leadership.”
“I have no doubt that Ms. Beachner will be an inspiring and effective advocate for students at Buffalo State and throughout SUNY,” said Buffalo State President Aaron Podolefsky. “I look forward to collaborating with her as she works on behalf of her peers across New York State.”
Beachner and her executive board are currently working with the current executive board to ensure a smooth transition.
Beachner, 25, is a native of Webster, New York, and a 2008 graduate of SUNY Potsdam. She is the daughter of Donna and Scott Beachner.
