Gail McCarthy: Fire and Light
August 13, 2005 – February 6, 2006
Ceramic artist Gail McCarthy has distinguished herself by producing sumptuous lustered vessels and wall-hung tile murals. Her patient process requires multiple kiln firings to produce iridescent, metallic luster finishes whose colors radiate with prismatic complexity. A selection of her work is presented with support from the Sylvia L. Rosen Endowment to mark Ms. McCarthy's long career in this region.

This exhibition, presented in honor of Dr. Edna M. Lindemann, founding director and director emeritus of the Burchfield-Penney, will examine Charles E. Burchfield’s fascination with the city as a symbol for American growth during the first three decades of the 20th century. This exhibition has been made possible by the generosity of Ilene and Peter Fleischmann, Parkside Coffee Company and Mr. Edward Wozniak.

This selection of works from the Burchfield-Penney's Craft Art collection covered with polka dots, circles, rings, holes, and spots, explores the use of repetitive dotty motifs that would have made the 19th-century French Pointillist painter Georges Seurat happy.

For the first time, visitors will have the opportunity to survey prints in the Burchfield-Penney Art Center’s collection including works by Burchfield's collaborator J. J. Lankes, Buffalo Print Club artists such as Kevin B. O’Callahan and Jean MacKay Henrich, Frank C. Eckmair, Endi Poskovic, Joe Scheer, William J. Schwanekamp and Robert Squeri. This exhibition is being organized by guest curator Peter Sowiski.

Concerning Heritage
The M&T Center, 1 Fountain Plaza, Buffalo, New York
Following the theme underlying Art on the Hyphen: Cuban-American Artists of Western New York, in which artists expressed their experiences relating both to their ethnic heritage and their current concerns living in the United States, this exhibition of work from the collection will feature work by artists of various ethnic backgrounds. Native Americans, African Americans, Eastern European immigrants, and Latino artists from several different countries are among those to be represented. Artists include George Campos, Craig Centri?, Ana Maria Hidalgo, Arnold Mesches, Richard Nephew, Roberto Pacheco, Endi Poskovic, Alberto Rey, Jolene Rickard, Jeanette Shropshire, Jeffrey Thomas, and others.

Live, Love, Work: The Roycroft Legacy
The Hyde Collection, 161 Warren Street, Glens Falls, New York
This exhibition, drawn from the extensive holdings of the Burchfield-Penney Art Center, highlights the vast achievements of the Roycroft community established in the late 1890s by Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915) in East Aurora, New York. The community was created in reaction to America’s industrialization and the concept of mass production. The Roycrofters sought to revive handcraftsmanship and return to a simpler, understated, anti-Victorian aesthetic by following the tradition of the British Arts and Crafts movement. Their accomplishments in metalware, woodwork, glassware, and ceramics will be featured including desktop accessories, lamps, vases, furniture, dinnerware, and other handcrafted objects. Twenty-five first edition hand-printed books from the famous Roycroft Press will also be on view. Love, Live, Work: The Roycroft Legacy is organized by the Burchfield-Penney Art Center. The Open Music Ensemble Invitational Concert
Graphically and non-traditionally notated pieces received by the Open Music Ensemble from a call for scores from young composers throughout the United States and Europe will be performed, many of which will either be world or New York premiers.
The Open Music Ensemble is the main performing ensemble associated with the Open Music Foundation. It is comprised of a large number of unique and talented musicians from around the country all who have added their own voices to the ensemble. The musicians who perform in the ensemble include Steve Baczkowski, Josh Descherer, Ben Harris, Casey Farina, Don Metz, Leah Muir, Otto Muller, Chris Reba, Will Redman, J.T. Rinker, Bill Sack, Sabatino Scirri, N.Andrew Walsh, Todd Whitman and others.
The Open Music Ensemble is a performing ensemble dedicated to graphic and pictographic scores, experimental free improvisation and promoting daring new music in American culture. Poetry Reading by Peter Ramos and Elizabeth Kelley
Peter Ramos’s poetry appears in Verse, Poet Lore, The Chattahoochee Review, Slipstream, and MIPOesias (online). He has poems forthcoming in Fugue, Indiana Review, and Verse. In 2000, he was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. His manuscript Short Waves won the 2002 White Eagle Coffee Store Press Chapbook Award. Watching Late-Night Hitchcock & Other Poems, another collection, was published in 2004 by Handwritten Press. In the last few years, Peter has given poetry readings at several universities in Michigan, Kentucky and Virginia. He has also read his work at the Washington Street Reading Series in Normal, IL, and in the Buffalo area—at Rust Belt Books, the Sound Lab, UB’s rare books room, Just Buffalo’s Literary Center, Niagara University’s Castellani Art Museum, and Buffalo State’s Rooftop Poetry Reading Series. Ramos is an assistant professor of English at Buffalo State College where he teaches courses in American literature.

Poetry Reading by Emily Grosholz
Emily Grosholz was born and raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia. She attended the University of Chicago, where she received her B.A. in 1972, and Yale University, where she received her Ph.D. in Philosophy in 1978. She has traveled widely in Italy and Greece, and lived in Germany, France, and England. Ms. Grosholz is a Professor of Philosophy and African American Studies and Fellow of the Institute for the Arts and Humanistic Studies at the Pennsylvania State University, and Life Member of Clare Hall, University of Cambridge. .
Emily Grosholz has published four books of poetry: The Abacus of Years (David R. Godine Publisher, Inc., 2001), Eden (John Hopkins University Press, 1992), Shores and Headlands (Princeton University Press, 1988), and the River Painter (University of Illinois Press, 1984). She also edited Telling the Barn Swallow: Poets on the Poetry of Maxine Kumin (University Press of New England, 1997), co-edited W. E. B Du Bois on Race and Culture (Rouledge, 1996) and is preparing a collection of essays on the legacy of Simone de Beauvoir. She is an Advisory Editor for the The Hudson Review, one of America’s most respectable literary quarterlies. She has received grants for her poetry and from the Guggenheim and the Ingram Merrill Foundations.
