Dancers Discover New Perspectives to Past in 'Recapitulation'

Buffalo State dancers will revisit past performances and present them anew in the two-hour program Recapitulation, which opens Wednesday, April 24, at 8:00 p.m. in Warren Enters Theatre.

The annual faculty choreographed performance showcases the varied genres the dance program offers—modern, jazz, contemporary dance, and ballet—in a combined show based upon a theme. In Recapitulation, 30 dancers will perform in three short acts.

“Each concert has a different point of view or perspective, and this year we thought of recapitulating ideas,” said Carlos Jones, assistant professor of theater, ho has choreographed a jazz and contemporary dance segment for the performance. “It is quite common for choreographers to revisit previous concepts. The intent is to arrive at new conclusions or experience the work from a different perspective.”

The other choreographers within the Theater Department are assistant professor Joy Guarino, associate professor Janet Reed, and adjunct professors Leanne Rinelli and Michael Lambert.

Preparation for the spring program begins in September when auditions are held. In all, roles—including set designers, costume designers, and technicians—are assigned to approximately 50 students.

“We get students from all different majors—theater, psychology, communication,” Jones said. “This is an opportunity for students to not only learn how to perform but also to put on a production through the process of teaching.”

Subsequent performances of Recapitulation will be held Thursday, April 25, and Friday, April 26, at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, April 27, at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Advance tickets are $15 general admission and $5 for Buffalo State students. Tickets purchased at the door are $10 for students, Buffalo State faculty, and staff.
