Flipped Learning Summit: August 10

On Friday, August 10, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center, Buffalo State will host the Flipped Learning Summit, a workshop that promises to "turn learning on its head."

With flipped learning, instructors deliver content to students outside of class time so in-class time can be spent building a greater understanding of the material. Instead of lecturing students in class and assigning homework, educators teach outside of the classroom via recorded lectures, videos, or readings. During class time, students are prepared for discussions, group projects, labs, tests, and assignments.

"Since I’ve used the flipped model, my students are more engaged and able to answer questions and solve problems among themselves," said Mark McBride, coordinator of library instruction at E. H. Butler Library. McBride uses flipped learning for his Advanced Library Research (LIB 300) course. "When the students do approach me with uncertainty about the material, I’ve noticed their questions are much more in-depth. In class, I act as a guide to iron out specific, complex concepts, rather than focusing on the entire lesson."

Jonathan Bergman and Aaron Sams, co-authors of the book Flip Your Classroom: Reach Every Student in Every Class Every Day, will host the workshop that includes a keynote speaker, panel discussion, and a demonstration on how to make, edit, and post a video lecture.

During lunch, participants will engage in discussions and demonstrations about how specific technologies can be used in a flipped classroom. The latter half of the workshop includes content-specific group discussions, a presentation from a local flipped learning practitioner, and a question and answer session with Bergman and Sams.

The Flipped Learning Summit is presented by the New York State Association for Computers and Technologies in Education (NYSCATE). The one-day workshop is $150 per person. The Professional Development Office will be sponsoring a small number of Buffalo State faculty members to attend.
