Football Falls at Wesley Despite Advantage in Several Statistics
DOVER, DE—Wesley (3-0/1-0) defeated visiting Buffalo State (0-2/0-1), 45-9, today in an Atlantic Central Football Conference game, despite committing six turnovers and gaining 60 fewer yards than the Bengals.
After a scoreless opening quarter, Wesley blew the game open with 24-straight pointsin a span of 7:08, taking a 24-3 lead into the intermission. The Wolverines scored first on an 18-yard pass play from Chris Warrick to Jon Lanouette. Chris Carlson booted a 40-yard field goal on Wesley’s next possession to extend the lead to 10-0.
The Wolverines added their final 14 points of the opening half without its offense touching the field. After a Josh Jones 38-yard fumble recovery returned for a score, Wesley blocked a punt on the next Bengals’ possession, and Ron Thompson brought it back 20 yards for the score.
Eric Buchanan got the Bengals on the scoreboard with just 25 seconds remaining in the opening half with a 25-yard field goal.
Buffalo State opened the scoring in the second half when James Perkins scored on a two-yard run, capping a four-play 79-yard drive early in the third quarter. Buchanan missed the point-after attempt.
The teams traded interceptions on the next two possessions, before Wesley’s Alpha Koroma scored on a five-yard touchdown. Koroma scored again from four yards out later in the third quarter to extend the Wolverines’ lead to 38-9.
Wesley added the lone score of the fourth quarter with a 55-yard scoring strike from Warrick to Curtis Gore.
Buffalo State committed four turnovers compared to Wesley’s six. The Bengals also outgained the Wolverines, 383-323, and won the time of possession battle by nearly 10 minutes, but allowed too many big plays in the loss.
Warrick finished the day 11 for 24 for 264 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions. Marcus Lee was the leading receiver for the Wolverines with five catches for 72 yards.
Buffalo State quarterback Mike Mikolaichik went 16 of 40 for 262 yards with one interception. Jonathan Allen made six catches for 151 yards. Perkins finished with 70 yards and a score on 14 carries. Michael Haynes tied a Buffalo State record with three interceptions.
Buffalo State will travel to Cortland next Saturday for a non-conference contest.
