Four-Goal First Period Lifts Men's Hockey Past Cortland, 6-3

BUFFALO, NY—Buffalo State (10-9-2/4-5-1) scored four first period goals and coasted to a 6-3 victory over visiting Cortland (6-13-2/1-7-2) in a SUNYAC contest tonight at the Ice Arena.

Cody Cole (St. Catharines, ON/Denis More) led the Bengals with a pair of goals. D’Arcy Thomas (Gatineau, PQ/Philemon Wright), Jason Hill (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) and Tyler Soehner (Baden, ON/Waterloo Oxford) all had a goal and an assist. Richard Curtis (Ottsville, PA/Pennridge) also had a goal, and Paul Michael Rivest (Whitby, ON/Henry Street) and Shawn O’Donoghue (Carbondale, IL/Carbondale Community) each added two assists.

Barry McLaughlin (Bellport, NY) and Gerard Heinz (Kings Park, NY) each had a goal and an assist for Cortland, and Nick Shackford (Burke, VA) added a single marker.

Cortland opened the scoring 6:09 into the game with a power-play goal by Heinz, but Buffalo State stormed back with four straight goals, including two in 24 seconds. Cortland pulled to within two with the lone second period goal by McLaughlin. Soehner extended the Bengals’ lead with his first career goal midway through the third period. Cortland added a late goal before Buffalo State put the game away with an empty-netter in the closing seconds.

Buffalo State outshot the Red Dragons, 31-25. The Bengals were 3 for 8 on the power play, while Cortland was 2 for 12 with the extra skater.

Buffalo State will host Oswego tomorrow at 7 p.m. Cortland will play at Fredonia.
