Hollander Wins 400th; Softball Sweeps Two

FT. MYERS, FL—Buffalo State Head Coach Sandy Hollander became the 25th coach in NCAA Division III history to earned 400 career wins as Buffalo State (3-1) swept a pair of games, topping Elms (MA), 7-1, and New England College, 5-3, today at Lee County Sports Complex.

Hollander earned win No. 400 in the opener as the Bengals scored three runs in the second and cruised to a 7-1 victory. Jolene Banach (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) paced the Bengals’ offense, going 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs. Laurie Hutten (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Brooke Matheis (Hamburg/Williamsville South) had a double and two runs scored, and Lauren Mruk (Lancaster/Lancaster) had a triple. Nicole Sabuda (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) earned the win, pitching six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and fanning five.

In the late game, Buffalo State scored four runs in the final three innings to overcome a 2-1 deficit and claim the victory. Lindsey Matheis (Hamburg/Williamsville South) was 2 for 2. Mruk was 2 for 3 with a walk, and Jordan Banach (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) was 1 for 2 with an RBI. Aimee Fisher (Hamburg/Frontier) earned the win, pitching 5 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and three runs, while striking out six. Sabuda retired all four hitters she faced to earn the save.

Buffalo State will play Kalamazoo (MI) and Lasell (MA) tomorrow at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. respectively at Lee County Sports Complex.
