The Burchfield-Penney Art Center is pleased to announce the opening of four new exhibitions featuring Western New York artists on Friday, January 19, 2007 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Caustic Ink: The Political Cartoons of Tom Toles, 2:2 featuring the work of Michael Herbold and Diane Bertolo, A Life in the Arts: Jeanette Blair and Selections from the Annette Cravens Modern Ceramics Collection.
Caustic Ink: The Political Cartoons of Tom Toles features more than 100 cartoons from Toles’ tenure at The Buffalo News and is loosely organized around the topics of the environment, world affairs, politics, civil rights and the Star Wars program. The exhibition will be on view from January 19 – March 25, 2007.
Following the success of the Burchfield-Penney’s 24/12, the three-part 2:2 series will highlight the work of 6 Western New York artists over a six month period. The first installation of 2:2 features the work of painter Michael Herbold and media artist Diane Bertolo. Ceramic artist Bryan Hopkins and painter Ted Miller will be on view in March 2007 followed by the work of Carl Lee, media artist and photographer Brendan Bannon in May. 2:2 featuring Michael Herbold and Diane Bertolo will be on view until March 4, 2007.
The Burchfield-Penney’s A Life in the Arts series has highlighted the work of artists who have had long and distinguished careers in the Western New York community. The work of watercolorist Jeanette Blair will be on view until March 4, 2007.
The Annette Cravens Modern Ceramics Collection consists of more than 240 objects by artists from the Europe, Japan, the United States, Canada, and South America. It features internationally celebrated artists such as Hans Coper, Lucie Rie, Bodil Manz, Roseline Delisle, Ruth Duckworth, Dorothy Feibleman, Bente Hansen, Poh Chap Yeap, Toshiko Takaezu, Angela Verdon, Elsa Rady, David Shaner, Hamada Shoji, Kohyama Yasuhisa and Western New York artists including Wayne Higby, Sue Katz and Frans Wildenhain. The exhibition, Selections from the Annette Cravens Modern Ceramics Collection, celebrates the gift of this collection to the Burchfield-Penney Art Center and Buffalo State College. The exhibition will be on view in the Sylvia L. Rosen Gallery until July 22, 2006.

The new 75,000 square foot Burchfield-Penney, designed by Gwathmey Siegel and Associates Architects, is scheduled to open in the spring of 2008. The two-story building will be the Burchfield-Penney’s first free-standing home and have a major presence on Elmwood Avenue in the heart of Buffalo’s Museum District.
