Men's Hockey Holds Off Cortland, 5-4

BUFFALO, NY--Sean Burke (Barrie, ON/St. Peter's) scored three goals to lead Buffalo State (8-11-1/5-5-0) past Cortland (3-15-2/1-8-1), 5-4, tonight in a SUNYAC contest at the Ice Arena.

Burke opened the scoring 7:08 into the game, but Cortland answered just 59 seconds later. Burke reclaimed the lead for the Bengals just 20 second into the second period, but the Red Dragons answered again 1:35 later. Buffalo State ripped off three more goals in the second period, including a pair within 21 second of each other. Cortland added another goal of its own with 20 seconds to play in the period, making the score 5-3 at the second intermission. The Red Dragons scored the lone goal of the final stanza just 1:11 in, but could not get the equalizer.

Burke led the Bengals with three goals, including the game-winner, and added an assist. Jason Hill (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) had a goal and two assists. Paul Gagnon (Troy, MI/Troy Athens) also scored, and Sean O'Connell (Buffalo/St. Francis) and Greg Prybylski (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) each had two assists.

Matt Schillace led the Red Dragons with a goal and an assist. Nick Catanzaro, Adam Lehmann and Barry McLaughlin also scored for Cortland.

Buffalo State outshot Cortland 41-28 for the game. Cortland was 3 for 6 on the power play, and Buffalo State went 2 for 5.

Buffalo State will travel to Geneseo next Friday for a 7 p.m. face-off.
