On the second Friday of every month, the Burchfield Penney Art Center at Buffalo State hosts free programs, concerts, and more. This month’s M&T Second Friday takes place Friday, September 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and is highlighted by an exhibit opening, live music, and an art workshop all from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

An opening celebration for artist and Revolution Gallery owner Craig LaRotonda will be held from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Cary Rumsey Gallery, located on the center’s second floor. LaRotonda’s solo exhibit, Divine Messengers, will feature 25 original sculptures and paintings.

After a busy summer concert season, soul ensemble Empress and the Royals will make its Burchfield Penney debut with a set of groove-infused funk and R&B from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The band consists of two core members, Amina "The Empress" Boyd and Greg "GD Funk" Clark, alongside such talented Buffalo-based musicians as Carl 'Flute' Johnson, Rufus 'Breezy' Cole, Nathan McCrea, Mike Porter, Tone Cummings, Richii Valentino, Martin Schmidt, and others.

At that same time, Burchfield Penney Art Center docents will assist visitors and young children with a hands-on art making workshop in the Studio Classroom.

Later, students will participate in Art Moves Me, a live, site-specific performance of dance and music accompanied by video projected onto the center’s Elmwood Avenue façade.
