Night at the Oscars Celebrates 'Old Hollywood' in Annual Party

The Campbell Student Union Social Hall will be transformed into a star-studded venue on Sunday, February 24, during the 12th annual TFA Night at the Oscars party.

Conceived and organized by Television and Film Arts (TFA) students enrolled in former TFA director Jeffrey Hirschberg’s Film and Criticism course, Night at the Oscars includes a live viewing of the Academy Awards ceremony on a big screen, a presentation of student film awards, and red-carpet interviews. Open to the community, the event begins at 8:00 p.m. and runs until midnight. The band Juniper Trolley will play prior to the ceremony, and catered refreshments will be served. 

The theme this year is “Old Hollywood.”

“We’re focusing on the golden age of Hollywood—the 1920s and 1930s—and invite people to dress in those fashions,” said TFA student Nicholas Sabio, one the event co-chairs.

The TFA planners will award a “best dressed” award to both a male and female guest.

The annual event also provides a venue for aspiring student filmmakers to be rewarded for their work with Pioneers Awards. A group of 22 students submitted short films in hopes of receiving awards for best picture, best writer, best director, best actress, and best actor based on the votes of TFA alumni. Two new categories this year are cinematography and editing.

Hirschberg noted that Night at the Oscars is completely student driven. The students do everything from booking the band to ordering the refreshments.

“It’s such a tradition that most students entering this class know we’re expected to put this together,” said co-chair Caity Heffler. “It’s really good experience. As someone who wants to be a producer someday, I know it teaches us valuable skills.”

Tickets are $10 for the general public. Students with ID will be admitted for free. All proceeds benefit the TFA program.
