The Burchfield-Penney Art Center is pleased to announce that former Maryland Governor Parris Glendening will speak at the museum on May 20, 2003 at 7:30 pm as part of the "Smart Growth and Choices for Change" exhibition's "Smart Growth Tuesdays" series.

The lecture will take place at Rockwell Hall, Buffalo State College, 1300 Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo, NY. Admission is $5.00 (free to members of the Burchfield-Penney Art Center), and tickets are available at Rockwell Hall or call 716 878 3005.

Gov. Glendening, president of the Smart Growth Leadership Institute, will discuss what the State of Maryland has done to be recognized as the "Smart Growth State" and will suggest actions that both government and the private sector can take to implement and benefit from "smart growth" policies and practices. His message is that better planned, more compact city and suburban development can save millions of dollars on public infrastructure and, by promoting quality of life, "smart growth" communities can increase their economic competitiveness.

The "Smart Growth Tuesdays" lecture and panel discussion series runs from April 22 to June 24 in conjunction with the showing of the National Building Museum's exhibition " Smart Growth and Choices for Change" at the Burchfield-Penney Art Center from April 4 to June 29.

This event is sponsored by the Burchfield-Penney Art Center and Partners for a Livable Western New York with financial contributions from The Integrated Realty and Development (IRD) Corp., the American Architectural Foundation, the American Institute of Architects/Buffalo-Western New York, the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, the American Planning Association-New York/Upstate Chapter and many other corporate, foundation and individual donors.
