SBDC Hosts Seminar on Grants for Technological Ideas

Ideas that find new uses for technology can translate into marketable products. The federal government has two grants, Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR), that offer $2.5 billion for innovative ideas that align with government goals.

SUNY Buffalo State’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) wants to help academics, scientists, researchers, and entrepreneurs who have technological ideas or are developing innovative products tap into that money through the free seminar “Turning Innovation Into Industry,” Friday, September 20, from 8:30 a.m. to noon in Bulger Communication Center East. The event is open to the public. A continental breakfast will be provided.

Jim Mayrose (pictured), chair and associate professor of engineering technology, is the keynote speaker. Mayrose has received more than $5 million for his innovative technologies. He will share his success story and provide insights into the SBIR program.

“We want to inspire people, even if they are not in the development process yet,” said Susan McCartney, SBDC director. “There is a huge amount of money available, but it needs to go to projects that align with the priorities of the federal government. There is an advantage of being associated with Buffalo State; the backup of a college assists entrepreneurs in getting starting.”

Co-sponsors of the seminar are the U.S. Small Business Administration, the New York State Small Business Development Center, and NYSERDA.
