The Seneca Diabetes Foundation has awarded Lafayette Williams of Gowanda, N.Y., a $5,000 scholarship in recognition of his leadership skills, community involvement and Native American cultural awareness on and off campus at Buffalo State College. Williams, who is a sophomore, is interested in pursuing a career in health and wellness. "My nine nieces and nephews are my inspiration," said Williams, who was recently diagnosed with type-2 diabetes. "My studying at Buffalo State College is a wonderful example for them and all Native Americans who decide to pursue higher education." Williams was recently honored at the Annual Seneca Nation Diabetes Foundation Golf Tournament and Awards Dinner where Maurice John, president of the Seneca Nation of Indians, and Barry Synder, president of Seneca Gaming Commission, presented him with the scholarship. The Seneca Diabetes Foundation established the scholarship to assist a Seneca Nation student pursuing higher education in the health or social services professions.
