September Events at a Glance

Throughout the coming year, Buffalo State will celebrate its longstanding mission as an institution that serves the city and its commitment to enhancing the community via the Year of the City.

Below, you’ll find a number of campus events worth seeing or experiencing in September. Get involved and see all that Buffalo State has to offer.

Through September 6
Across the Visual Arts IV
An impressive collection of paintings, photographs, ceramic pieces, sculptures, and fibers created by nine students chosen for the James Lombardo Sr. Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts are on exhibit in the Czurles-Nelson Gallery in Upton Hall through September 6. Gallery hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. A closing reception with the artists will be held from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. September 6 in the gallery. Free.

September 7
Performance: Brotzmann/Adesiewicz Duo
“Three for a Quarter, One for a Dime”
Part of a series of modern jazz performances presented by David Kennedy in conjunction with the Burchfield Penney Art Center and Hallwalls, Famed saxophonist Peter Brotzmann performs with vibraphonist/percussionist Jason Adasiewicz from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. in the Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Auditorium in the Burchfield Penney. Tickets are $10. (716) 878-6011.

The Olmsted Parks Poetry Project: Exploring the Poetic Nature of Public Spaces
In celebration of Buffalo State’s Year of the City initiative, the Rooftop Poetry Club is holding a poetry event from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. in the Rose Garden at Delaware Park. It is the first in a series of poetry in the park events celebrating the genius of Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of American Landscape architecture, and the poetic nature of public spaces. Lynda H. Schneekloth (pictured), a professor in the University at Buffalo’s School of Architecture and Planning, is the featured guest speaker, followed by poets Irene Sipos, lecturer in the Buffalo State Writing Program, and Lisa Forrest, outreach librarian for the Butler Library, who will lead guided workshop activities. September 8
Panel Discussion: Buffalo-Hamilton Connection
A group of civic leaders, journalists, philanthropists, and scholars from Hamilton, Ontario, will end their day-long tour of Buffalo with a panel discussion from 5:00 to 6: 00 p.m. in the Burchfield-Penney Art Center auditorium. Part of the Year of the City events.

September 11
Volunteer Fair and National Day of Service
The Buffalo State Volunteer and Service-Learning Center (VSLC) will host community organizations from across Buffalo for the September 11 National Day of Service 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in E. H. Butler Library. Representatives from various organizations will discuss volunteer opportunities with students, faculty, and staff.  Spend 10 minutes or two hours on projects to assist veterans, emergency preparedness, and community improvement. September 12
Survive and Thrive: Essentials for Starting Your Own Business
The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) presents a workshop covering essential information needed to start a business from 8:30 a.m. to noon on the second floor of the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Topics include creating a business plan, competition analysis, and tax, legal, and insurance issues. The workshop is free for faculty, staff, students, alumni, and military veterans and $20 for all others. September 12-15
The Anne Frank Project
Now its fourth year, the Anne Frank Project examines such topics as genocide, social justice, hatred, and bullying will include approximately 50 speakers and performers whose presentations support the theme “Embracing Responsibility.” All events take place throughout the Buffalo State campus and are free and open to the public.

September 14
M&T Bank Second Friday Event
The September 2012 Second Friday at the Burchfield Penney Art Center celebrates the opening of two extraordinary exhibitions: Spain: Rock, Roll, Rumbles , and Revolution and McCallum Tarry: Intersections. The free event runs from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.   

Television and Film Arts Premiere Screening
Three films by students in the television and film arts program open: Feeble Attraction, Speechless, and Friends Without Benefits, running from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. September 14 in the Burchfield Penney Art Center Auditorium. Free. Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Auditorium   

September 15
Artist Talk and Screening of Manual “Spain” Rodriguez
Film director, producer and writer Susan Stern will present a documentary of her husband, underground cartoonist and artist Manual “Spain” Rodriguez, who grew up on Buffalo’s East Side and now lives in San Francisco, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center Auditorium. Afterward, Rodriguez will discuss his career. Free. (716) 878-6011.

September 19-22 and 26-29
When the Walls Come Down-Truth!
Created by the storytelling team of the Buffalo State Theater Department, the Anne Frank Project, and Mashirika Performing Arts (a creative and performing arts group from Rwanda), at 8:00 p.m. September 19-22 and September 26-29 and 2:00 p.m. September 22 and 29 in the Flexible Theatre, Donald Savage Theater and Communication Building. Directed by theater professor Drew Kahn, the play stems from a two-week trip theater students made last January to Rwanda where they visited genocide memorials, orphanages, schools, refugee camps, villages, wildlife sanctuaries, and cultural organizations. September 20
Inaugural Year of the City Lecture
Gary Welborn, chair and associate professor of sociology, present “Buffalo State’s West Side Initiative–What Is It and Where Did it Come From?,” 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Rockwell Hall 302.

September 21
Annual Burchfield Penney Art Center Art Auction and Gala
For the first time since the Burchfield Penney Art Center moved into its present location in 2008, it is holding its annual Art Auction and Gala in the center. The celebration, which runs from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m., includes a tour of the galleries, live music, and a sit-down dinner prepared by Oliver’s Spirits with wine and cocktails donated by The Premier Group. A high point of the evening will be silent and live auctions of works created by more than 80 of this region’s most accomplished artists. Tickets cost $200. September 21 and September 23
Faust
Buffalo Opera Unlimited presents Charles Gounod’s magnificent opera at 8:00 p.m. September 21 and 2:00 p.m. September 23 in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall. The opera, which includes dance, magic, and a romantic-tragic story, has its roots in the age-old story of Faust and Mephistopheles and is considered one of the most important contributions to French music. Performed in French with English surtitles, the opera is directed by Tim Kennedy. Tickets are $25 for students and senior citizens, and $30 for the general public. (716) 878-3006.

September 26
Student Percussion Trio and Dance Ensemble
Buffalo State percussionists and dancers perform the works of John Cage and Lou Harrison at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall. Free and open to the public. (716) 878-3006.

September 27
Museums by Moonlight
Celebrate the 150th anniversaries of the Buffalo Science Museum, the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society, and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery with one ticketed event 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Passes include admission to the Burchfield Penney Art Center plus rare access to the Richardson-Olmsted Complex, Buffalo State Art Conservation Lab, and Forest Avenue Resource Center. Complimentary architectural tours also will be held at the Buffalo Museum of Science at 4:00 p.m., the Historical Society at 5:00 p.m., and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery at 6:00 p.m. Tickets cost $25 in advance, and $35 at the door. September 28
The Olmsted Parks Poetry Project: Exploring the Poetic Nature of Public Spaces
Second workshop in the series takes place at Bidwell Parkway from 3:00-4:30 p.m. Meet at Bidwell Parkway’s Colonial Circle (next to the statue of Daniel Davidson Bidwell astride a horse). The workshop will featuring author Carey Anne Miller and poet Andrew Rippeon. Part of the Year of the City events.

Through September 30
Secret Spaces
Interactive exhibit created by Art Education Department master’s program graduates Kari Achatz and Nick Napierala. In this fantastical bedroom scene, guests are encouraged to write on furniture and investigate the installation that reveals hidden blankets and props. Free with museum admission, which is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors over age 62, $5 for students with ID, and free for children age 10 and younger.
