Softball Downs Wheaton, Falls to Smith

Buffalo State dropped a 5-0 decision to Smith (MA) this morning, before rebounding to upset the No. 9 team in Division III Wheaton (MA), 5-3, this afternoon in Ft. Myers, FL.

Smith (7-0) shut down the Bengals' bats in today's opener. Freshman Lauren Wright (Westfield) made her debut on the mound for the Bengals, allowing five runs in three innings. Liz Beiter (N. Tonawanda) held the Pioneers off the scoreboard for final four innings as she extended her shutout streak to eight innings to open the season. Alyssa Brosius (N. Tonawanda) was 2-for-2 with a stolen base for the Bengals.

Buffalo State got its offense in gear in today's second game against Wheaton (6-5). Emily Goldyn (Lancaster) was 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI, and Tiffany Ciolek (Salamanca) was 1-for-1 with two RBI. Kristen Scheffold (Lancaster) earned her first win as a Bengal on the mound, allowing six hits and just one earned run.

The Bengals are now 2-2 and will continue their southern trip tomorrow against Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 11 a.m. and St. Michael's (VT) at 1 p.m.
