Softball Drops Doubleheader to Cortland
Buffalo State hosted the SUNYAC's top-team today, and Cortland, ranked No. 7 in the nation, defeated the Bengals, 3-2 and 9-4.
In the first game, Cortland opened the scoring on a solo-homerun by Lara Stone (Windsor/Windsor) to lead off the fourth inning. The Red Dragons manufactured another run later in the inning, and extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning, when Stone singled to drive in Jen Rockwell (Scotia/Scotia). Buffalo State climbed back into the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a solo-homer by Nadine Sirianni (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls), and on an RBI double by Lindsey Matheis (Hamburg/Williamsville South). Cortland held on in the seventh inning, however, to claim the 3-2 victory. Stephanie Adamshick (Milton/Marlboro) improved to 14-0 on the mound striking out seven, as she allowed just seven hits and two runs. Stone finished 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Red Dragons, and Carin Piacente (Putnam Valley/Walter Panas) went 3-for-3 with a double. Sirianni led the Bengals' bats, going 2-for-4 with the homerun, and Laurie Hutten (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) was also 2-for-4. Liz Beiter (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) fell to 8-2 on the mound, allowing eight hits and two earned runs.
In the nightcap, Buffalo State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but Cortland stormed back in the bottom half with six runs of its own. The Red Dragons added three more runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead. The Bengals closed the gap to 9-4 in the sixth inning, but could not come any closer. Megan Dore (Staatsburg/FD Roosevelt) and Keri Banta (Washingtonville/Washingtonville) were both 2-for-4 with an RBI for Cortland. Rockwell added a triple and three RBI. Ang D'Amboise (Ballston/Lake Shenendehowa) earned the win on the mound, pitching the final four innings, allowing two runs and three hits. Sirianni led the Bengals' going 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Nicole Willats (Tonawanda/Sweet Home) was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Buffalo State fell to 12-10 overall and 6-4 in SUNYAC play. The Bengals will host Oswego tomorrow at 1 p.m. Cortland remained unbeaten in conference play at 12-0 and improved to 25-3 overall. The Red Dragons will visit Fredonia tomorrow at 1 p.m.
