Softball Earns Sweep at SUNYIT

Buffalo State moved to within one win of clinching a berth in the SUNYAC playoffs today with a two-game sweep at SUNYIT, winning the first game 10-2, before edging the Wildcats 1-0 in the late game.

The Bengals fell behind 2-0 in the fourth inning of the opener, before rallying to score 10 runs in the final three innings. Buffalo State pounded out 14 hits, led by Alyssa Brosius (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) who was 4-for-5 with an RBI. Lauren Mruk (Lancaster/Lancaster) added a pair of doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Nicole Willats was 2-for-2, and Lindsey Matheis (Hamburg/Williamsville South) was 2-for-4. Liz Beiter (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) earned her 10th win of the season allowing just five hits and one earned run.

Laurie Hutten (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first inning in the nightcap, producing all the offense pitcher Kristen Scheffold (Lancaster/Lancaster) would need. Scheffold threw a two-hitter with eight strikeouts for the shutout.

Buffalo State improved to 18-12 overall and 10-4 in SUNYAC play. The Bengals will travel to Potsdam on Friday with a chance to clinch their 11th trip the the SUNYAC playoffs in 13 years.
