Softball Falls Short Against Plattsburgh; Eliminated from SUNYAC Championships

CORTLAND, NY—Plattsburgh (31-11) used a three-run homerun in the fifth-inning to vault in front of Buffalo State (27-11) and pulled away to claim a 6-3 victory to eliminate the Bengals from the SUNYAC Championships today at Cortland.

Plattsburgh finally opened the scoring in the top of the fifth inning with a two-out three-run homerun, after a pair of base hits to start the inning. The Bengals scored one run in the bottom of the inning when Nicole Sabuda (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) hit a double that scored Aimee Fisher (Hamburg/Frontier). Buffalo State had a runner on second with no outs in the sixth, but could not get her around. Plattsburgh added three insurance runs in the seventh inning with a two-out double that scored runners from second and third, followed by a run-scoring single. Fisher hit a two-run homerun to give the Bengals life in the bottom of the seventh, but the Bengals could not continue the rally.

Jolene Banach (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) was 2 for 2 with a double, and Sabuda was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Fisher finished 1 for 2 with her third homerun of the tournament. She also took the loss on the mound, allowing nine hits and six runs with six strikeouts.

Plattsburgh will face host Cortland tomorrow at 12 p.m. in the SUNYAC Championship game.
