Softball Powers Past Opposition in Sweep

FT. MYERS, Fla.—Buffalo State (5-1) converted 18 hits into 16 runs in a pair of wins today at the Cape Coral Sports Complex, defeating Plymouth State (4-6) 10-1 in five innings and topping Lasell (3-6), 6-2.

Buffalo State scored early and often in the first game, racing to the 10-1 win over Plymouth in just five innings. Jenna Schwartzmeyer (Williamsville/Williamsville South) led the bats, going 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs, and Nicole Sabuda (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) was 1 for 3, also with a double and three RBIs. Laurie Hutten (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) was 2 for 3, Jessica Mooney (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) was 1 for 2 and added an RBI and a run, Christina Tschari (Clarence/Clarence) had a double and an RBI, and Jolene Banach (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) had a triple and three runs scored. Aimee Fisher (Hamburg/Frontier) earned her fourth win, allowing three hits and one run while striking out 11 in just four innings. Jess Less (Blasdell/Frontier) struck out two in one inning of scoreless relief.

In the second game, Buffalo State trailed 2-1 after a two-run, fourth-inning homerun, but rebounded with a three-run fifth inning and scored two more in the sixth. Mooney and Jolene Banach were both 2 for 3 at the plate. Lauren Mruk (Lancaster/Lancaster) was 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Sabuda picked up her first win of the season on the mound, allowing two runs and four hits while striking out four in 4 1/3 innings. Fisher picked up the save, as she struck out seven of the eight batters she faced and did not give up a hit.

Buffalo State will play a doubleheader against Thomas tomorrow at the Cape Coral Sports Complex at 9 and 11 a.m.
