Softball Splits Conference Opener with Fredonia

Buffalo State defeated visiting Fredonia today in the SUNYAC opener by a 6-0 margin, but fell in the second half of the double header by a 2-0 score.

In the opening game, Lauren Mruk (Lancaster) opened the Bengals' scoring with a three-run homerun in the second inning, and Buffalo State never looked back. Mruk also had a double in the game. Tiffany Ciolek (Salamanca) and Emily Goldyn (Lancaster) were each 2-for-3 with a double. Liz Beiter (N. Tonawanda) was the winning pitcher, allowing just two hits in the shutout. Casey Mazurek(Dunkirk) led Fredonia at the plate, collecting both of the team's hits.

Fredonia scored a run in the first and fifth innings to win the nightcap. Laurie Hutten(Kenmore West) and Heidi Rammacher(Lakeshore) were each 2-for-3 for the Bengals. Kristen Scheffold(Lancaster)took the loss on the mound for the Bengals allowing five hits and two runs in four-and-one-third innings of work. Mazurek recorded the shutout victory on the mound for the Blue Devils, allowing just four hits over seven innings. Heather Mercer was 2-for-3 with an RBI to pace the Fredonia offense.

Buffalo State is now 6-6 overall and 1-1 in SUNYAC play. The Bengals will travel to SUNYIT this Friday. Fredonia is 7-5 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
