Softball Sweeps New Paltz

Buffalo State (17-3/6-2) held SUNYAC-rival New Paltz (7-7/2-4) to one run and seven hits, sweeping a doubleheader, winning 5-1 and 7-0, today in downstate New York.

In the opener, Buffalo State took a 5-0 lead in the second inning and cruised to the victory. Lindsey Matheis (Hamburg/Williamsville South) paced the Bengals offense, going 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Laurie Hutten (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Emily Goldyn (Lancaster/Lancaster) was 1 for 2 with a double, and Brooke Matheis (Hamburg/Williamsville South) was 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Kristen Scheffold (Lancaster/Lancaster) improved to 7-1 on the mound, allowing just four hits and striking out seven.

In the second game, Brooke Matheis was 3 for 3 with five RBIs, and Lindsey Matheis was 2 for 3. Lauren Mruk (Lancaster/Lancaster) was also 2 for 3 with an RBI. Senior Melissa Balsavage (Depew/Depew) walked one and limited the Hawks to just three hits to improve to 5-1 on the season with three shutouts.

Buffalo State will host Geneseo on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
