Softball Sweeps SUNYAC-Rival Oneonta

Buffalo State swept a home doubleheader against SUNYAC-rival Oneonta today, overcoming a five-run deficit in the first game to win 7-6, and held on to an early lead to claim the late game by a 7-4 margin.

In the opening game, Oneonta jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a Sarah Place (Binghamton/Binghamton) two-run homerun. The Red Dragons opened up a 6-1 lead by the fifth inning, but Buffalo State stormed back with a six-run, seven-hit inning highlighted by a three-run homer by Lindsey Matheis (Hamburg/Williamsville South). The Bengals shut the door in the final two innings and escaped with the 7-6 victory. Liz Beiter (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) earned her seventh win on the mound, despite allowing six runs on 10 hits. Nadine Sirianni (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) and Laurie Hutten (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) were both 2-for-4 for the Bengals. Place finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored, and Michelle Norwich (Mohawk/Mohawk) was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI for Oneonta.

After opening up a 2-1 lead in the second inning of the nightcap, Buffalo State extended its lead to 5-1 in the top of the third inning when Nicole Willats (Tonawanda/Sweet Home) drove in three runs with her first of two triples on the day. Oneonta came back with three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame to cut the deficit to 5-4, but the Bengals would add insurance runs in the fifth and seventh innings to secure the 7-4 win. Kristen Scheffold (Lancaster/Lancaster) earned the victory for Buffalo State, as she struck out seven batters in four-and-two-thirds innings of no-hit relief. Willats was 2-for-3 with the two triples and four RBI. Lauren Mruk (Lancaster/Lancaster) was 3-for-3 with four runs, and Sirianni was 2-for-3 for the Bengals. Liz Scimeca (Sayville/Sayville) led the Oneonta offense, going 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.

Buffalo State improved to 10-8 overall and 4-2 in SUNYAC play and will host a doubleheader with New Paltz tomorrow at 1 p.m. Oneonta fell to 12-8 and 4-2 in conference. The Red Dragons will visit Fredonia tomorrow.
