Summer at the Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium

Supplement your warm-weather star gazing with some celestial savvy from Buffalo State’s Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium.

This year’s summer programs explore topics including the sun, color and light, stars, black holes, and ancient astronomy. After each interactive show, guests are invited to view the summer sky via telescope with the planetarium staff (weather permitting).

Our Invisible Universe
Through July 21
The universe around us has many unseen components. Hidden wonders shine at frequencies that our eyes cannot register. Explore what you can’t see, learn about light and dark matter, and theorize about the possible fate of the cosmos.

The Sun: Our Star and Other Solar Systems
Through July 21
Learn what the sun is made of and other facts about the largest object in our solar system. Investigate recent planet discoveries in other solar systems, including planets that may be similar to Earth.

The Lives and Deaths of Giant Stars
July 20 to August 18
What happens when stars die? If you’ve seen more than one science fiction movie, you’ve heard of a black hole, but what are they exactly? Will our own sun become a black hole? Find the answers to these questions and more at this star-studded program.

Ancient Astronomical Sites
August 24 to September 22
Ancient astronomers have left behind astonishing artifacts and sites all around the world. Discover whether this thousands-of-years-old practice was prophetic or merely recreational.

Admission is free for Buffalo State students, and active or retired military members with proper ID. Tickets for other college students, children under 18, and senior citizens are $4. General admission is $6. Reservations are strongly encouraged.
