Swimming and Diving Wins Last Dual Meet of the Season
Buffalo State hosted its last dual meet of the season today against Brockport. The men’s team edged out the Golden Eagles, 116-111, while the women’s team won by a commanding score of 131-106.
The men’s team had seven first-place touches in this afternoon’s meet. Junior Rich Gaczewski (North Tonawanda/North Tonawanda) touched first in the 1000 free with a time of 11:01.20. Other first place finishes for the men included sophomore Derek Stoklosa (West Seneca/West Seneca West) in the 100 free (52.30) and junior Dave Papke (Woodlawn/St.Francis) in the 50 free (23.23). Sophomore Eric Hastings (Wilmington, DE/Mt. Pleasant) touched first in the 500 free (5:08.06) while junior Mike Luther (Blasdell/Frontier) took first in the 200 back (2:09.49).The men’s 400 free relay team of Stoklosa, Hastings, Luther and Papke took a first place finish with a time of 3:28.58. Senior Bret Stodolka (Darien/Alexander) took home a first place finish on the one-meter board with a score of 202.75.
The women’s side saw eight first-place finishes. The team was led by freshman Sara Weinert (South Byron/Byron-Bergen) who took home two individual events and anchored the first-place 400 free relay team. Weinert’s first place finish in the 1000 free was a new Buffalo State record (11:15.30). She also touched first in the 500 free with a time of 5:35.52. Sophomore Susan Stiner (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) took first in the 200 free (2:08.98) while sophomore Mindy Wood (Middlesex/Marcus Whitman) finished first in the 400 IM (5:09.96). Freshman Kari Pappert (Macedon/Palmyra-Macedon) touched first in the 200 back with a time of 2:33.80. The 400 free relay team of senior Marie Ryer (Buffalo/Hutch Tech), freshman Ashley Remmes (Grand Island/Grand Island), Stiner and Weinert took a first place finish with a time of 3:59.60. The one-meter and three-meter diving competitions were owned by Buffalo State. Freshman Amanda Dory (Amherst/Sweet Home) took first on the one-meter with 200.50 while freshman Nicole Rutkowski (Williamsville/Williamsville North) posted a score of 223.80 on the three-meter to earn first place.
The women finished their regular season at 3-6 while the men finished at 4-4. Both teams will compete at the SUNYAC Championships Feb. 9-12 at the E.C.C. Burt Flickinger Center.
