Film buffs don’t have to travel to Hollywood for the Academy Awards ceremony to experience an evening of red-carpet glitz. Rather, they can attend an elegant and fun-filled ceremony on the Buffalo State campus.
Students in the television and film arts (TFA) program will unfurl a red carpet of their own during the third annual TFA Night at the Oscars, Sunday, February 26, from 7:00 p.m. to midnight in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall.
The public is invited to watch the nationally televised ceremony on a 30-foot-by-30 foot screen, share their Oscar picks in red carpet interviews, enjoy light refreshments, and hear local rock/jam band the Twin City Kings perform. Also, students and the general public can watch a collection of short student films (10 minutes or less) and cast their votes for best picture, best director, and best screenplay for the TFA Pioneer Awards that also will be announced during the night.
The theme of this year’s ceremony, “Black and White,” takes its lead from the highly acclaimed and multi-nominated film The Artist that harkens back to old Hollywood, said TFA Director Jeffrey Hirschberg. Guests are encouraged to dress in semiformal or formal attire as they have in past years.
“We’ve had older couples from the community attend and seen women dressed in ball gowns they may have worn 50 years ago,” Hirschberg said. “It’s a great event, and it’s getting better every year. Some people come for a couple of hours; some come for the whole night.”
Last year, about 250 people attended.
Film students organize the event, design the posters, approach local businesses for donations, and order the food, with oversight from Hirschberg. “This is their party,” he said.
Night at the Oscars is free to all students with ID. Admission for the general public is $10. All proceeds go to the TFA program to funds scholarships and help students afford school-based trips such as the one this spring to the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.
