Track & Field Competes at Slippery Rock Open

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.--Buffalo State's men's 4x100-meter relay earned a first-place finish, and the women's squad set a school record to highlight the Bengals' slate today at the Slippery Rock Open.

The men's foursome of Willie Hordge (Buffalo/Forestbrook TX), Shilah Richardson (Auburn/Auburn), Joe Russell (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) and Mario Hicks (Corning/Corning West) ran a first-place time of 41.99. Meanwhile, the women's 4x100 team of Toya Edwards (Brooklyn/Clara Barton), LaVonne Barfield (Rochester/Wilson Magnet), Tiffany Aaron (Rochester/Wilson Magnet) and Christina Lawrence (Pittsford/Rush-Henrietta) placed third with a new Bengal record time of 49.56. Danielle Smelser (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh) also set a new school record in the 10,000 meter run, shaving nearly 15 seconds off the previous mark, running the race in 41:25.46.

Other top finishes on the men's side, included Ray Shadowens (Troup, TX/Arp) placing third in the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.30 and tying for third with teammate Tim Diegelman (Clarence/Clarence) in the long jump (6.63 meters). Hicks was also third in the 100-meter dash (11.19) and fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles (15.82). Kyle Fenner (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh) added a sixth-place showing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:10.21), and Joe Wooley (Amherst/Sweet Home) was sixth in the triple jump (12.89 meters).

Barfield added a sixth-place finish in the long jump (4.98 meters) for the women. Margaret Hughes (Elmira/Elmira Free Academy) was also seventh in the 5,000-meter run (19:26.37).

Buffalo State will compete at Nazareth next Saturday in the final tune-up before the SUNYAC Championships.
