Track & Field Sets Six School Records and Wins Five Individual Titles at SUNYACs
GENEVA, NY—Buffalo State’s indoor track and field teams established six new school records and had athletes capture five individual championships at the SUNYAC Championships today at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. The women’s team finished fourth of eight teams, while the men were fifth.
Four school records and three championships were on the women’s side. LaToya Edwards (Brooklyn/Clara Barton) paced the Bengals with a pair of first-place finishes and new school bests. Edwards won the 55-meter dash with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.24. She also won the 200-meter dash in 26.02. Jenelle Orosz (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) broke her own school record for the third-consecutive meet, with a winning jump of 1.73 meters. Jameieka Price (Niagara Falls/Aviano Americano) also broke a school record, finishing second in the 400-meter dash in 59.80. Buffalo State also finished second and fourth in the weight throw with Sarah Gedratis (Lockport/Akron) throwing 14.10 meters, and Candace Aaron (Rochester/Wilson Magnet) throwing 13.88 meters. Chelsea Prophet (Buffalo/daVinci) was third in the 55-meter dash (7.46) and fourth in the 55-meter hurdles (9.03). Kelly Tooley (N. Syracuse/CNS) was third in the shot put (11.12 meters), Tenisha Jones (Rochester/Wilson Magnet) was fourth in the triple jump (11.13 meters), and LaVonne Barfield (Rochester/Wilson Magnet) finished fifth in both the long jump (5.20 meters) and the triple jump (11.03 meters).
On the men’s side, Willie Hordge (Buffalo/Forestbrook TX) scored in three events, highlighted by setting a school and meet record, winning the 200-meter dash in 22.02. He also posted an automatic NCAA qualifying time of 6.35 in the 55-meter dash, finishing second by just .01 seconds. He added a seventh-place showing in the long jump (6.23 meters). Mario Hicks (Corning/Corning West) led three Bengals scoring 55-meter hurdles, setting a school record and winning the event with an NCAA provisional time of 7.70. Ray Shadowens (Troup, TX/Arp) and Joe Russell (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) finished third (7.96) and fourth (7.98) respectively. Joe Wooley (Amherst/Sweet Home) was second in the triple jump (13.58 meters) and fifth in the long jump (6.46 meters). Elvis Bream (Lockport/Lockport) was fourth in the 400-meter dash (50.44), and Puka Hoching (Gouverneur/Gouverneur) was fourth in the shot put (13.59 meters).
Buffalo State’s men and women both finished seventh last season. The Bengals will compete at the NYSCTC Championships next weekend at St. Lawrence.
