Two striking exhibitions open September 14 at Buffalo State’s Burchfield Penney Art Center: Manuel “Spain” Rodriguez's Spain: Rock, Roll, Rumbles, Rebels & Revolution and
Bradley McCallum and Jacqueline Tarry's McCallum Tarry: Intersections.
Both exhibitions run through January 20, 2013.
Spain: Rock, Roll, Rumbles, Rebels, and Revolutionprovides an in-depth retrospective of the graphic works, iconic characters, and recurring motifs created by Rodriguez, a Buffalo-born comic book artist. The exhibition includes both original drawings and reproductions representing all stages of Spain’s career, including selected prints from his poster designs for the San Francisco Mime Troupe (1974-2011). It particularly emphasizes his recent work where he explores his personal history growing up in Buffalo and the global history of conquests, wars, and revolutions.
McCallum Tarry: Intersectionsfocuses on the extraordinarily diverse and challenging work of the biracial couple Bradley McCallum and Jacqueline Tarry. Their photographs explore themes of racism, identity, injustice, and interracial marriage, which was illegal until 1967.
Evidence of Things Not Seenfeatures 104 portraits of people arrested in 1955-56 Montgomery, Alabama, during civil rights protests, while Endurance, a combination of photographs and video, focuses on the issues of homelessness and the use of public space, and The Projection series charts race representation in popular culture.
Burchfield Penney hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday; 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thursday, and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday. The museum is closed on Monday.
