In conjunction with his April 5 concert at the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall and the release of his new novel, The Music Lesson, bass guitar icon Victor Wooten will give a free workshop on Saturday, April 5 at 1:00 pm in Rockwell Hall, Room 204, on the campus of Buffalo State College.

Grammy-award winning musician, performer and teacher Victor Wooten has added author and philosopher to his portfolio with the release of his first book, The Music Lesson. Using music to teach life's lessons, Wooten takes the reader on a journey of learning and discovery.

During The Music Lesson Workshop, Wooten will introduce students to a different but natural approach to music. He will explain many of the concepts from his book that can not only be applied to music but also to every day life.

Recognizing a gap in standard music instruction, Wooten developed a radical approach that looks at music as a language which helps us experience it form "the inside out" rather than "the outside in" - which is the typical approach of beginning with notes, technique and theory. Wooten gets to the heart of music, getting students in touch with their emotions to first feel the music within themselves, thereby facilitating the students' understanding that they themselves make the music and that the instrument is just a tool. By directing focus on these aspects, a student can sound like a professional musician in a matter of minutes rather than years.

Wooten believes that music can be taught much like a first language is taught in the home, by living it first, learning techniques and theory later and by removing much of the attention focused on the instrument itself. This allows the student to have a more natural and enjoyable musical experience. Students come away with not only a different way to approach music, but a way that can also enhance their life.

This workshop offers students of all ages and abilities the chance to learn from one of the most influential music innovators of our time and will include lecture, demonstrations, student participation and end with a question and answer session.
