As spring approaches, the SUNY Buffalo State campus will be bursting with musical, artistic, and intellectual activities that demonstrate the college’s commitment to the Year of the City.

Through March 7
Portals to Another Landscape

The Interior Design Department is hosting Portals to Another Landscape, an exhibition of installation and graphic works of the German scenographer Kristina Siegel, in Upton Hall’s Czurles-Nelson Gallery. The exhibition is a spatial installation based on a memento mori theme. Siegel, originally from Dresden, Germany, and now living part time in Buffalo, is an internationally acclaimed installation artist and scenographer. A free reception with the artist will be held Thursday, March 7, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the gallery. All are welcome to attend. (716) 878-3549.

My Appreciation of Watercolor: A Personal View with Kathy Shiroki
As part of the International Center for Watercolor Lunchtime Lecture Series, Kathy Gaye Shiroki, curator of museum learning and community engagement at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, lecturer of art education,  and coordinator of the Czurles-Nelson Gallery, will present a lecture on John Cage’s New River Watercolor Series from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Conference Room.

Curator’s Tour
Nancy Weekly, head of collections at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, will tour guests through the new exhibition Suspended Motion: Sculptures and Watercolors by Ellen Steinfeld on view in the Charles Cary Rumsey Gallery and the Sylvia L. Rosen Gallery for Fine Art in Craft Media from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Warm Latin Breezes Faculty Recital

Buffalo State music faculty and friends will perform a variety of light classical and popular styles from Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, and other Latin American countries in a 7:30 p.m. performance in the Louis P. Ciminelli Recital Hall. Performers include Holly Bewlay, voice; Emily Boyce and Ivan Docenko, piano; Crystal Reinoso, clarinet; Ellen Barnum, bassoon; Marlene Witnauer, flute; Evan Drummond, guitar; and Tiffany Nicely, percussion.

The Ladies Man
The Theater Department presents Charles Morey adaptation of Georges Feydeau’s bedroom farce The Ladies Man at 8:00 p.m. in Warren Enters Theatre in Upton Hall. Theater Department chair Donn Youngstrom directs. Performances will be held at 8:00 p.m. March 7-9 and March 14-16 and 2:00 p.m. March 9 and 16.

March 8
M&T Second Friday at the Burchfield Penney Art Center

Visitors can take advantage of a workshop presented by Buffalo State art education graduate students, “My Sketchbook Has Virtually Become My Diary,” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Participants will create travel-size books to fill with inspirations. Also, a screening of films by Dani Leventhal will be shown at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. Leventhal creates videos that unearth a curious beauty in the minutiae of everyday life.

Gallery Talk

Join Burchfield Penney Art Center docents in an in-depth discussion of Charles E. Burchfield’s the Horn Call from the Sibelius Fifth at 2:00 p.m. Sketches, paintings, and archival research will be examined and presented.

A Musical Feast
The Burchfield Penney Art Center is hosting chamber music from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. with Charles Castleman, violin; Jonathan Golove, cello; Wildy Zumwalt and Diane Hunger, saxophone; Claudia Hoca, piano, Tom Kolor, percussion; and Moshe Shulman, bandoneon. Music by Hindemith, Debussy, Felder, JT Rinker, Ysaÿe, Stravinsky, and Piazzolla.

March 12
Lecture/Discussion with Mariam Ghani

Mariam Ghani (pictired at left), a Brooklyn-based artist, writer, and teacher whose research-based practice examines the intersections among place, memory, history, language, loss, and reconstruction, will deliver a free lunchtime lecture from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center auditorium. Ghani’s work in video, installation, and photography has been exhibited and screened internationally.

March 13
Buffalo State Jazz Ensemble

The student musical group led by associate professor of music Rick Fleming will perform a free concert of contemporary jazz at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall. Free and open to the public. (716) 878-6401.

Annual Design Student Exhibition
Work from design students will be on display March 13 through April 12 in Upton Hall’s Czurles-Nelson Gallery. The exhibit will feature ceramics, fibers, metals/jewelry, wood/furniture, and communication design. A reception with the student artists will be held Thursday, March 21, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the gallery. (716) 878-6032.

Buffalo State Digital Music Ensemble

This student ensemble will presents its unique brand of music in a 7:30 p.m. concert at the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall. Led by Tomas Henriques, assistant professor of music, the ensemble presents a wide repertoire, from early electronic analog works to jazz-fusion and avant-garde pieces. Free. March 19
Buffalo State Philharmonia

Now in its fourth season, the Buffalo State Philharmonia will deliver a 7:30 p.m. concert at the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall. Directed by Paul Ferington, lecturer of music, the Philharmonia is composed of faculty, students, local professional musicians, and music educators who are committed to performing the symphonic repertoire at a high level. Year of the City Lecture
Tim Bohen (pictured at left), author of the local best-seller, Against the Grain: The History of Buffalo’s First Ward (2012), will present the free lecture, “A Very Brief History of the First Ward: Buffalo’s First Irish Neighborhood” at 4:30 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center West. Vocalis

The Vocalis Chamber Choir, a select ensemble of dedicated a cappella singers from Western New York, will perform choral works from the Renaissance to the present at 7:30 p.m. in the Louis P. Ciminelli Recital Hall. Consisting of 20 voices, the choir strives to inspire, educate, and enlighten its audiences through an intimate and moving concert experience.

Buffalo State Women’s Chorus and Symphonic Choir

Acoustic Alchemy

As part of the Great Performers Series presented by M&T Bank, Acoustic Alchemy, a contemporary jazz group that embraces a wide spectrum of musical styles, will perform at 8:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall.
