The Music Department, in conjunction with Buffalo State’s Year of the Arts, has announced its 2011-12 Faculty and Friends Concert Series—an eclectic lineup of classical, jazz, and world music performances.

Monday, September 19
Holly Bewlay, soprano
Korean-American soprano and Buffalo State voice faculty member Holly Bewlay will perform in a recital with faculty pianist, Emily Boyce. Highlights of her program include works by John Corigliano, Samuel Barber, John Carter, Rikcy Ian Gordon, Richard Hundley, William Bolcom, and Benjamin Britten.

Ray Ricker, saxophone and Bill Dobbins, piano
Come enjoy a fantastic evening of music as Eastman School of Music faculty members Ray Ricker and Bill Dobbins collaborate to present jazz and classical works from their duo album Jazz Sonata and other recent projects.

Crystal Reinoso, clarinet
Crystal Reinoso, professor of clarinet at Buffalo State, invites the campus and community to enjoy a program of beautiful and exciting Brazilian music. Reinoso will share the charming sounds of Brazilian choro, a classically-based popular music form infused with Latin melodies and samba rhythms. Guest performers include faculty pianist Ivan Docenko, guitarist Stuart Fuchs, and faculty percussionist Tiffany Nicely.

Buffalo State Wind Ensemble with special guest Don Harry, tuba
The Buffalo State Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Rick Fleming, will feature Don Harry, Principal tuba of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Ralph Vaughan-Williams’ “Concerto for Bass Tuba,” which has been transcribed for wind ensemble.

Clara String Quartet
A Buffalo State faculty ensemble in residence, the quartet includes Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra members Amy Glidden, violin; Jacqueline Galluzzo, violin; Kate Holzemer, viola; and Amelie Fradette, cello. Back by popular demand, their new program will include works by Beethoven and Ravel.




Thursday, November 3
Petronel Malan, piano
Born is South Africa, Petronel Malan began playing piano at age four and debuted with the Johannesburg Symphony at age 10. After winning all major national competitions in her native country, Malan moved to the United States earning her degrees from both Michigan State University and the University of North Texas. Lauded by reviewers as an unmistakably creative force in the classical music industry, Malan has received three Grammy nominations, including “Best Instrumental Solo Album 2004” for her debut disc.

Buffalo State Wind Ensemble
Join the Buffalo State Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Rick Fleming, and percussion soloists Mark Hodges, Principal Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Buffalo State music faculty; Jim Tiller, Principal Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra; and Brad Fuster, chair of the Music Department, as they perform Russell Peck’s stunning triple percussion concerto, “The Glory and the Grandeur” at Kleinhans Music Hall. “Year of the Arts” opening remarks will be offered by President Aaron Podolefsky.

Buffalo State Holiday Choral Concert
Start your holiday season with a rousing choral experience as five different choirs take to the stage in the Performing Arts Center. Join us as the Buffalo State Choirs, under the direction of Victoria Furby and John Fleischman, welcome the Buffalo Niagara Youth Chorus and the Buffalo Performing Arts Select Chorus for joyous holiday music and carol sing-a-long.

Diaspora Drumming Ensemble
Returning to the Performing Arts Center, Diaspora Drumming is a trio dedicated to studying, teaching, and performing percussion music of the African Diaspora. Members Ringo Brill, Tiffany Nicely, and Gabriel Gutierrez study with African masters in various styles, traveling to learn on the soil where the music was created. Diaspora Drumming is joined by Buffalo State’s 25-member West African Drumming Ensemble under the direction of Tiffany Nicely.

Unless otherwise noted, all concerts take place at the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for general admission and free to all students and can be purchased online, by phone at (716) 878-3005, or in person at the Rockwell Hall Box Office (during office hours and two hours prior to performances) beginning Monday, August 22.
