The Burchfield-Penney Art Center presents, 24:48, a video/performance/installation hybrid by Tom Holt and Brian Milbrand. The performance begins on Wednesday, October 1 at 8:00 pm and culminates with an opening reception 48 hours later, on Friday, October 3 from 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm. The Burchfield-Penney will be open to the public throughout the 48-hour continuous live performance. The reception is free of charge and open to the public. The complete project is on view Saturday and Sunday, October 4 and 5, 2003.

“The Burchfield-Penney Art Center offers a dynamic range of programs and exhibitions featuring the art and artists of Western New York,” said Ted Pietrzak, executive director of the Burchfield-Penney Art Center. “24:48 combines the work of over 20 local artists working in a variety of media over a 48 hour period. The end result will be a terrific showcase of the depth and diversity of the arts in our region.”

24:48 consists of video documentation of 24 two-hour performances, including painting, sculpture, acting, poetry reading, musical performances and more. Each interval is recorded and then displayed continuously on a monitor in the viewing area, with one monitor being added every two-hours. The result is a wall of 24 monitors that are simultaneously broadcasting the past 48 hours of activity. In addition to the video documentation, there will be a variety of artworks around the gallery that were created during many of the two-hour intervals.

The cumulative output of 24:48 is two-fold: the video documentation of the 48 hours of activity combined with the physical works of art created throughout the project. Endurance is a key aspect of 24:48, requiring organizers, Tom Holt and Brian Milbrand, to be awake for more than 48 hours while harnessing the creativity of a number of local artists. Throughout the opening reception, the audience is invited to interact with the monitors, turning up and down the volume to isolate which piece, or performance, is most interesting to the viewer.
