The Burchfield-Penney Art Center is pleased to announce a two-part special presentation as part of the "Smart Growth and Choices for Change" exhibition's "Smart Growth Tuesdays" series: "All About Roundabouts" and "Improving Streetscapes and Calming Traffic" at 5:30 pm and 7:00 pm respectively.

The discussion takes place at Rockwell Hall, Buffalo State College, 1300 Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo, NY. Admission is free (voluntary donation appreciated).

"All About Roundabouts " will be presented by Mark Lenters, P.E., from SRM Associates/Roundabouts in Whitby, Ontario, Canada. This discussion focuses on the more than 400 American communities that are building roundabouts instead of installing traffic signals at intersections. Sarasota County, FL will not permit a new traffic signal unless it can be proven that a roundabout will not work. More than 1,000 roundabouts are presently under construction in France. This special presentation will describe how roundabouts work and why they are better for both the motorist and the pedestrian.

"Improving Streetscapes and Calming Traffic in Village Centers and City and Suburban Neighborhoods" describes how to effect traffic calming in communities and the importance of calming traffic to create pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods. The discussion will include information about specific traffic-calming tools that have the greatest impact and how to address the concerns of emergency vehicle access and snow removal. Audience participation is encouraged.

Buffalo architect James Rozanski will be this evening's moderator. Panel Members include: traffic engineer Joseph Tocke; Brian Rowback, Director of Western Region in the New York State Department of Transportation; Joseph Giambra, P.E. Commissioner of the Department of Public Works in the City of Buffalo, NY; traffic engineer Joseph Steinmetz; Clark Patterson from Rochester, NY; Janet Van Huizen from Imagine Hamburg, Village of Hamburg, NY; and Richard Soluri, Mayor of Village of Lewiston, NY.

This event is sponsored by the Burchfield-Penney Art Center and Partners for a Livable Western New York with financial contributions from The Integrated Realty and Development (IRD) Corp., the American Architectural Foundation, the American Institute of Architects/Buffalo-Western New York, the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, the American Planning Association-New York/Upstate Chapter and many other corporate, foundation and individual donors.
