William Bednarek, '81, doesn’t know what all the fuss is about. He insists that he’s just a kid from Black Rock- Riverside who went to work every day and did his job. But whenever he mentions to someone that he spent his career in the U.S. Secret Service, they immediately ask for stories: Where did you work? Who did you meet? Can you even tell me that—or is it classified?

"When you say 'Secret Service,' people think James Bond and action and intrigue," said Bednarek, who recently retired after 27 years of service, more than a decade of which was spent working at the White House and the vice president’s residence. "I certainly saw some action during my years patrolling the streets around the embassies in Washington, D.C., but my time at the White House was mostly routine."
