Alumnus Contributes to 'New York Times' Article on Buffalo's Resurgence

Communication alumnus Michael Canfield, '13, is a contributing reporter for "The Wind and Sun Are Bringing the Shine Back to Buffalo," a recent New York Times article about Western New York’s economic revitalization.

“I received a message in June from a colleague who works for a New York City-based political magazine, asking if I'd be able to do some work for the Times,” said Canfield. “Despite being extremely busy that day, I jumped on the opportunity. Who turns down the New York Times?”

Written by Times Business Day reporter Diane Cardwell, the piece details the city’s renaissance and investment in renewable energy resources. Canfield, who has written extensively for the Buffalo News and the Lockport Union-Sun and Journal since graduation, provided reporting and research for the story.

“It was a fantastic experience, and I'm fortunate to have had it,” said Canfield. “The feedback from the article has been great and I'm hoping it leads to more opportunities down the road.”

While at Buffalo State, Canfield served as news editor for the Record and as a web editorial assistant in the College Relations Office.

“I'd like to thank the journalism program at Buffalo State for putting me in a position where I was able to do something like this,” Canfield added.
