Buffalo State College's third annual Western New York Clay Olympics took place on Tuesday in the ceramics studio in Upton Hall.
The event began at the Burchfield-Penney Art Center with a lecture by visiting artist Mitch Messina, professor of art at Nazareth College.
The Clay Olympics events pitted three art teacher alumni and their students against each other and featured a day-long exhibition of the artwork by students competing in the events. The students' works were juried by Professor Messina for cash awards.
Students representing Lancaster, Pioneer and Lewiston-Porter high schools competed individually and in teams using clay and various clay forming methods in timed events. Students from each school also competed with each other to design a t-shirt to represent their school and the event. Lewiston-Porter High School won the the Olympics events for the third year in a row; Lancaster High School won this year's t-shirt competition.
Funding for the event is made possible by the Sylvia L. Rosen Endowment at the Burchfield-Penney Art Center, Sheffield Pottery, Lewiston-Porter High School and Buffalo State College.
