Exquisite and thought-provoking student art is on display in Upton Hall’s Czurles-Nelson Gallery through September 4. Across the Visual Arts V: The James P. Lombardo Sr. Award for Excellence features 10 Buffalo State artists representing each department in the visual arts.

In 2010, James Lombardo Jr., ’95, established the award and exhibition in honor of his father. Every fall, the chosen students are given the unique opportunity to travel New York City for an expenses-paid weekend to meet with business people, working artists, and gallery professionals. They also have their work displayed in the Rogue Gallery Chelsea in New York City, as well as the Czurles-Nelson Gallery.

Lombardo, a New York City investment adviser and art collector, sponsors the annual trip to help the next generation of artists get exposure and learn how to make a living from their art. The artists chosen for 2014 are Scott Annese, wood/furniture; Justin Burby, communication design; Megan Cavanaugh, sculpture; Rebecca Dwight, fibers; Stephanie Fowler, ceramics; Sarah Kieffer, metals/jewelry; Melanie Klimjack, printmaking; Dustin Perdziak, painting; Andrea Rongo, photography; and Kelsie Tangelder, art education.

Gallery hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. A free reception with the artists will be held Thursday, August 28, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the gallery. For more information, call (716) 878-3549.
