Arun Gandhi, founder of the M. K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence and the grandson of Mohandas Gandhi, will speak on “Nonviolence as a Positive Way of Life,” on Apr. 7, 2005, at 12:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Buffalo State College.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Buffalo State Coalition for International Relief Efforts of Higher Education and United Students Government as part of an effort to raise awareness and funds for the victims of the Dec. 26, 2004, tsunami in Asia. Gandhi has waived his usual fee for the speaking engagement.
The coalition includes students from Buffalo State, Medaille College, Niagara University, Canisius College, Erie County Community College and Niagara County Community College. The group is hoping to raise at least $10,000 through sales of wrist bracelets, bake sales, a movie series and other fund raisers for the International School of Bangkok Tsunami Relief Network, which is leading the effort to help rebuild the Bang Sak school in Khao Lak, which was destroyed by the tsunami About 120 children in pre-K through grade 6 attend the school; 23 of them lost one or both of their parents, and most children at the school are living in temporary shelters
