Aspiring TV/Film Writer Wins Scholarship

John Szablewski, a television and film arts major, received a $5,000 scholarship from his employer, Auntie Anne’s.

Szablewski, a sophomore who wants to write for TV and films, intends to put the money toward his internship next summer. “Almost all the program’s internships are in either Los Angeles or New York City,” he said, “so the scholarship will really help.” His goal is to write for—and maybe even create—a critically acclaimed sitcom, such as Seinfeld or the Office.

“I’ve always liked to entertain people,” he said. “There’s so much seriousness; I’d rather make people laugh. Laughter makes a bad day better.”

Szablewski works as a shift manager in Auntie Anne’s pretzel store and bakery in the Galleria Mall. He was one of just six students across the country to receive the scholarship, which Auntie Anne’s gives to post-secondary students “in recognition of their outstanding work ethic and educational accomplishments.”
